Departed Manners.

Goldfinch60

Into the petrol station I went,

Filled up the car with petrol.

Into the shop to pay the bill ,

Got to the counter.

“Good Morning” I said,

“Pump number 7 please”

“Thank you” said the lady,

The lady behind the counter.

To the counter next to me

Came a young lady,

“Five!” was all she said.

The lady behind the counter

Told her the price,

The young lady handed over the payment

Then just walked out!

This stunned me,

The only word the young lady said

Was “Five!”

No please,

No thank you.

As I was thanking the lady,

The lady who served me,

I asked if this happened often.

“Many, many times” she said

“People have no manners these days”.

What has happened to manners

And politeness in this era?

It costs nothing

And is worth everything.

So come on people,

Just to remind you,

There are only three words,

Three words you need to remember.

Please,

And Thank you.

Is it the way they were brought up (dragged?). Where did the parents get this from.
I remember having those three words drilled into me as a post brat stage child. Now they lubricate my interactions day to day.

As they do mine. It was awful to see this happen. Manners cost nothing.

Yes - and let's not hold a door open for some people. We may feel like slamming it in their face, if we get no 'thank you', but a weird look. But then that's two of us being impolite - us and them.
Should we be tempted to try a selfish day, e.g. just barging ahead, and '[our] beauty before age' and always go first?'
And do your Store Assistants just grunt, or do better than that?

I always try to be polite, it costs nothing and it may make another persons day.

True, Gold. Erm, we might say - oohh, ,we have to go first - beauty before age, you know! (ohh, vanity! lol).

Politeness should always be shown to all.

It's sadly not just the young ones - I can't recall the number of times elderly people have just walked by when I've held the door open for them.

Love the music - it reminds of the time when I first fell in love with the erhu (in Vancouver of all places).

            • Goldfinch60

I read a letter in the newspaper once during the feminism time where a man held open a door for a women and she turned round to him and said โ€œYou donโ€™t have to hold the door open because I am a woman? โ€œ he replied โ€œ I am not, I am holding the door open because Iโ€™m a gentlemanโ€.

There seem to be fewer of us gentlemen around nowadays do there not Michael?

Another great observational poem that sadly reflects the times we presently live in.... Thank you Andy

Sincere thanks Andy for bringing this need to our attention - - those three words are invaluable to any society but are sadly lacking and so is a simple smile when they are being used - - how sad.

                • Goldfinch60

Very true Fay, a smile can move mountains.

                  Andy
