Was I there in the sixties?
I can remember it, so some say I wasn’t there.
But I can remember the great bands, the great songs.
The Beatles reigned but Elvis was King.
I was in the House where the Sun rose on The Animals,
Where Satisfaction of the Stones was missing.
Gerry walked with me so I was Never Alone,
The Searchers gave me Sweets which
Really Got Me into Something Good.
Tom found life Not Unusual
Until Lucy found the Diamonds.
The Vibrations were always Good on The Beach;
The Harem became Whiter in their Pale life.
The songs ended with Serge making love to Jane.
“I was there!” said my mate Joe
“The wars in Margate and Clacton!”
“Brighton sixty four, I was there!”
Mods and Rockers, clashing on the Beach;
And where was I, I was in the bar with friends,
Drinking beer and smoking Gauloise.
Dressed in my suit with the collarless coat;
A Dedicated Follower of Fashion.
Yes I remember The Sixties with love.
The time of my young manhood.
Times with good friends and laughter;
The bands, the dances, the girls.
The girls, always so sweet and me so coy;
Days of my innocence, a world always remembered
With fondness and love.
The change of the seventies where my life became serious
And was never the same, as marriage and children took over.
But still fashion had its price!
With my long hair, beard, pale grey bell-bottomed suit,
The white platform shoes, and of course the kipper tie,
A Dedicated Follower of Fashion?

- Comment from author about the poem: The Uneducated O.A.P. mentioned 'The Sixties' in a reply to my poem of yesterday and that reminded me of a poem I wrote some years ago, so Bill here is the Sixties. The song Go Now was a hit in 1965 - I was there!

Hi Andy,
A brilliant, good write.
You have captured the essence of the Sixties.
My late mother said there is no time like the Sixties it was a wonderful unforgettable time.
Keep writing ✍ and safe during these challenging times.

ANGELA HERE - Good Morning Uncle Andy - Thanks for sharing a Great Song by a great 60s Group. Such LYRICS & even better Harmony ! Much of both missing in todays music ! I missed the 60s by almost 30 years but thank God for digitally remastered CD's & Alexa ! Although born in 1983 Brians preferred era is the 50s & 60s and he has a massive CD & a modest Vinyl Collection. We have invested in a BANG & OUFLSON CD Player to do them justice !
*Thanks for the Memory* of so many iconic Groups & Tunes ! Brian & I envy those who were Teens in the 60s so many precious memories & psychedelic dreams ! Im on Las Ramblas - BARCELONA today !

A fine write Gold.
There were proper comedy shows in the 70's still though. When on telly it says 'Comedy shows coming soon', I yell ''Where?' at the screen. lol. Laugh? I never started.
I thought this was gonna be about the Ten-Sixties, 1066 and all that!
Comedy has changed into a totally different vogue from back then Orchi, I do not believe it is so funny nowadays.
Andy
I say to myself: 'Since when was [insert name of dreadful comedian/comedienne/comedy show] funny?!'
Blimey, this is brilliant Andy.. I was there too but a bit younger maybe... You got me in the groove so ya did...
Not a lotta people know this, so keep it to ya self... I once sang Dont let the sun catch you crying, Dizzy and I like it on stage at the Bedford Lido with Gerry Marsden & the Pacemakers 🙂
Thanks Neville.
I saw Gerry and the Pacemakers a few years ago at a local venue and he sounded just the same and took me back to the sixties for a while.

Great number - - remember being there for that and others and your priceless poem reminds us all of a certain maturity what we are missing today ................ thanks for the memory my friend.
Thank you Fay, great times.
Andy
For me it was the period form 1957 to 1966 and I would place Buddy Holly at the top of thr list - great times indeed.
I too would put Buddy Holly at the top of the list, whenever i hear him I seem to know all the words to his songs and sing along with him. I often wonder what would have happened if he had not died in that 'plane crash.
