Comforting Call - Isaiah Series (1)

Tune: Winchester New

('On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry')

Isaiah 40 v.1-5

*********

Comfort, comfort, my people all

Hearken now to the heralds call

John Baptist cries in wilderness

Turn from your sins, repent, confess

For he a voice, he says, Prepare

Way of the Lord, it just and fair

Make straight in desert a highway

For our God, to Him trust and pray

Every valley shall be lifted

Up, mounts and hills be made low, bid

Crooked places to be made straight

Rough places mae smooth, not be late

And the glory of the LORD shall

Be revealed, and all flesh shall tell

Shall see it together, the LORD

By his mouth has spoken this word

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.8.8.8. One in an onging series, from pasages in Isaiah in the Old Testament. Hills, valleys, rough, smooth, etc seem to be symbolic here, e.g. the 'high' or 'low' things in our lives. An Advent theme, though not wishing the year away!
