Tune: Old Yeavering
(Like a mighty river flowing')
Matthew 13 v.10-17
*********
Disciples said, Lord, why do you
Speak in parables? It is true
Jesus said, Because to you be
Revealed mysteries, here see
Mysteries, they of the kingdom
Of heaven, hidden truths, wholesome
Yet to some applies prophecy
Which Isaiah said, so be
Outcome expressed as intentioned
But as idiom it mentioned
By hearing, some shall hear, but not
Understand, that be their lot
And seeing, they shall see, but shall
Not perceive, and they not fare well
For their hearts are waxed gross, grown dull
Not receptive spirit, soul
Ears they have become dull to hear
Eyes they have closed, sight not appear
Lest at any time they should see
With eyes, and hear with ears free
And should understand with their heart
Receive of the gospel their part
And be converted, turn to me
The Lord, I would heal them, see
But blessed the eyes, they that do see
And the ears that do hear, so be
Many have desired to see, hear
Of old, the things now known here

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.7.8.7. metre. Bit involved today! To explain verse 3 and following verses: These are expressed as a Hebrew idiom - the outcomes are expressed as if they were the intentions. The 'incisiveness' is what the prophet (Isaiah) perceived when he was inspired to write these words.

I will aim to explain more, if I can, if you are completely befuddled by the 'idiom'!
I suppose parables helped in understanding for the uneducated masses in those times Orchi. Why on earth they have to be regurgitated in the twenty first century is beyond me for we are not the same uneducated bunch in the west are we? But christianity always has resisted bringing itself into relevance for the modern day be it the seventeenth or the twenty first century..... it has inbuilt inertia.
I suppose - cos they are still relevant for today.
Leave it out mate, you dont need telling a story to explain its meaning, just the meaning you will understand immediately, you're not daft.
It's said that Jesus gave parables, hoping that people would look into the meaning of them further. If only looking on the surface, it could be like 'seeing, but not perceiving', and 'hearing, but not understanding'.
Well the ones I heard were pretty shallow... parable of the sower for example. It's simple and easy to see the meaning and reasoning, I'm not thick.

Mayeb we don't have to scratch too far below the surface then. But the idea is not 'Oh, they're simpletons; just humour them; nothing too difficult, mind you'.
I talk in parables but nobody understands them as I say them in my second language, the first being English, the second being Rubbish.
