The Day I Found Out You Wanted To Kill Me

Rocky Lagou

The day I found out you wanted to kill me,

I felt no resentment.

I just sat fixed in my armchair,

And began to observe life and its intricacies.

It was a warm and humid day,

The bees were swarming by,

As usual.

The ancient trees from my square window

Swayed with the sway of their typical uncalled-for happiness.

If only mankind could be more passive like nature –

If only we had that same flair of cordiality –

That each Old Oak and each Larking Lilac

Silently exhibits.

The day I found out you wanted to kill me,

I felt no alarm.

I just prepared myself a cup of coffee,

And began to read your death threat.

It was sent as “anonymous,”

But your handwriting is too peculiar to not notice.

You said some pretty harsh things in that letter.

It reminded me of my blunt poetry.

I would’ve never imagined the cavernous depths

Of the abysmal holes in your heart.

Right from the start,

Of the first sentence,

Of the first word,

Of the first letter.

I felt nothing but sympathy.

Actually, scratch that, empathy.

Because each human on this occult Earth

Has cuts and bruises in their hearts from birth.

The day I found out you wanted to kill me,

I called you nonstop.

It must’ve been 30 missed calls,

But each sent me to voicemail.

“Beep”'

Hi I know your mad at me but please call me back.

“Beep”

Hey I’ve tried to call you like ten times please text me at least.

“Beep”

FOR GODSAKES PLEASE PICK UP THE PHONE! I LOVE YOU, PLEASE, DON’T LEAVE ME ALONE LIKE THIS!

The day I found out you wanted to kill me,

I just wanted to talk you out of it.

With me and my poetic nature,

A Sylvia Plath line came to mind when reading your letter:

“The pain you wake to is not yours”

This was all I wanted to tell you.

The hurt you wake to,

Your family setbacks,

The lovelessness you feel,

It’s not yours.

Your birthright of “evil,” doesn’t define who you are.

The person you think you are,

Because of past scars,

The tar-black stars,

THEY hanged around your head and claimed

That you must chase to death...

Doesn’t have any power over you.

The day I found out you wanted to kill me,

I just wanted to love you more than ever before.

I just wanted to tell you,

“You are loved”

I just wanted a chance to hug you till your tears came rolling

Down my shoulders and into the Earth where new life will Commence.

A new chance to show the world that your past doesn’t define you.

A new chance to prove that it is possible to become a new being.

That despite you being who you think you are now,

You have the power to revolutionize your future.

A chance to dictate your emotions into bundled

Flowers of love.

Into a sturdy Grand Oak that will be impregnable

To outside forces that want to intrude and encrust

Your soul with murky old oil.

The day I found out you wanted to kill me,

I set down my coffee

Closed the windows

Shut the curtains

Grabbed the keys

And drove to your place.

The day I found out you wanted to kill me,

I thrusted open your door

And knocked the GUN that was pointed

To YOUR head.

The day I found out you wanted to kill me,

I saved YOUR life instead.

And finally gave you that warm embrace and promised

I won’t you leave you alone anymore.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I hope you guys enjoy this one. Definitely not the stereotypical "Valentine's poem" but it's my take on it. It's a chance to reveal that every human has their own darkness tucked away. A chance to say to everyone, LOVE YOURSELF. Happy Valentine's Day!

Well, that was a turn up for the books.
Love the twist at the end, kept me on the edge of my seat. Just thinking if that was my ex, she would have sued me for saving her life.

    • Rocky Lagou

Thanks so much Bell! I'm glad you enjoyed the piece and found it intriguing. Also your ex suing you for saving her life- teehee. Some people think death is an escape, but life is more precious. Thanks for your comment! 💖👍

Tears rolled up in my eyes…overwhelming the emotions and each line stabbing inside…mightier than sword, reciting a million lines and Sylvia Plath’s line so aptly justified aas well as given a resurrection to define…

      • Rocky Lagou

Wow. I'm so touched to hear that my poem drove you to tears. I feel like as a writer that is such an accomplishment. Also, about the Plath line, she is one of my all-time inspirations so I felt an urge to include her in there and I'm glad you noted it. I really appreciate your comment! Thanks! 👍💖

Interesting poem . Happy Valentine’s Day to you . Valentine’s Day is just another day isn’t it though . Yes every human has there darkness but we all deserve to love ourselves despite the darkness because the darkness is not who we are

        • Rocky Lagou

True. Idk but usually people center on love and romance on Valentine's so I felt like this post may have seemed slightly odd. Either way, I'm happy to hear your input and you thoughts. Thanks! 💕😉

          • Rainbow

Did something prompt you to express it in this way ? Yeah but love and romance should be for every day I think . Guess Valentine’s Day makes some people feel upset as if you are somehow strange if your not with someone or haven’t got anyone special .

            • Rainbow

The title to me sounded like the pain you may feel if you feel rejected for example .

              • Rocky Lagou

Well honestly I'm just an unconventional person (check my bio) so I wanted to post a poem about love but during a time of tribulation; as opposed to the lovey-dovey tales you'll usually hear on Valentine's (not that there's anything wrong with the more romantic poems, I personally am a sucker for them, but I just wanted to express something that's tucked away more often which is the extremities of relationships that could lead people to even threatening their own partner.) So this can be interpreted as rejection but what matters is that there's a reconciliation at the end. Thanks for your questions, I appreciate you interest! 💖

              • Rainbow

Sounds a bit like talking about rejection as well .

                • Rocky Lagou

Yeah I guess that can be an interpretation as well. Love is complex so it would be apt.

An interesting read with a twist at the end.

                  • Rocky Lagou

Thanks so much for the comment! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! Also YES the twist at the end wasn't actually premeditated; I was planning on either ending off on a cliffhanger (like the speaker goes driving to the other person's place and it ends) or simply having the speaker killed- But I felt a little lighthearted today, especially since it's Valentine's so I ended it off on a good note. Thanks once again! 💕💕❣❣

l thought this was a very beautifully done poem. There is so much wisdom in your words of acceptance and understanding for the hopes of peace. You seem to be giving the much-needed vibes about how nonviolence can be done. Good Job!

                            • Rocky Lagou

Thank you so much Dhanya! I'm so glad you visited this poem as it is a fond poem of mine. I wanted to convey a message which would resonate with every reader: self-acceptance. I feel that self-harm should never go down, and we must all realize our worth and our value. So I'm so glad that you were able to capture that message and also find it beautiful! I strive to create meaningful poetry with a vivid use of imagery. Thanks so much and I wish you a great day! ✨💖

“And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” - Sylvia Plath
