"THE GAY VIRUS"

Rocky Lagou

There’s a new virus goin’ around,

There’s a new virus ‘round town.

It goes by the name of “HOMO-19.”

I heard it’s highly contagious, ‘specially to the young.

There’s a new virus goin’ around,

There’s a new virus ‘round town.

With many variants, like “Lesbo-ivitis,” and “trans-emonia”

That’s spreading like wildfire, or so I heard.

Oh, really Bernice? Well let me ask ya this,

When God was schmoozing with ole Moses up on Mt. Sinai givin’

Him the Ten Commandments, did the fine print say:

“11th: Hate your fellow gay as you hate yourself?”

Oh, shut ya mouth Edna.

You know what I’m tryna say,

This thang’s goin’ haywire.

Anyway, since when you been all butthurt ‘bout it?

Ever since they said, “it’s a boy.”

Listen Bernice, I don’t want my child to be raised in a society

That bedevils him just because of who he is. If he turn out straight

“Hallelu,” but if not I ain’t gon’ be crucifying him.

Oh no, Edna.

They’ve gotten you too!

Stay away from me, I don’t talk to fools.

No, sir-ee. Not this time.

Oh Bernice, aw aw, go take ya prejudice somewhere else,

Anyway YOUS is on MY porch, so go vamoose on outta here.

What de gays ever don de you?

I swear ya act like it’s so excruciating, who they hurtin’?

Uh- um, well… I mean ya know,

The way they go outta principles, like ya know we

Got PRINCIPLES to follow Edna! PRINCIPLES!

Or is you gon’ tell me ya ain’t a Christian no mo’?

Bernice I been told you,

I am a faithful child o’ God.

But listen here Bernice... come close,

No come closer, come closer.

“HE LOVES EVERYONE!”

Oh, dammit, Edna,

How’s ya gon’ scream in my ear like dat!

It’s like ya got da devil written all over ya!

“Oh, sweet Jesus, hallelu, come over this woman on this day!”

What Bernice? You got the audacity to “shoo” me outta my own home,

And call me a “fool.” It only serves you right.

But it’s true Bernice, He don’t discriminate;

We’re the only ones doing so... and it starts with people like you!

Edna, you know what,

I’m gon’ make my way to Aunt Sally’s porch,

Yours is too darn “modernized” and “open-minded.”

Just keep in mind... THEY GOT YA, Oh they GOT YA, alright!

Yeah, Bernice, keep on walkin’

Keep on walkin’

Yous is the only virus here, the only real virus!

God have mercy over this ignorant human race!

  • Comment from author about the poem: Okay, so I'm going to be honest. I'm low-key proud of myself after writing this. I've had this idea for a WHILEEEE now, but I never would've imagined that it would turn out like this. I intended for there to be zero dialogue and for it be more "poetic." But wow am I happy that I stuck to this storyline. So this poem is set in a rural countryside, and our main protagonists are Bernice and Edna, which are two redneck women who have two VERY distinct mindsets and they're disputing over a serious topic, one that I'm very passionate about, the human rights, and more specifically, the LGBTQ+ rights. And I wanted to bring religion into this because, let's be honest, it's often religious people who have a lot to say against them (Don't feel like I'm attacking any religious people, or that I'm being quick to "generalize," but I just wanted to include that into this poem) Regardless, I wanted to end this right, and proclaim, that despite one's beliefs, we should NEVER discriminate over things as harmless as who one likes or what they identify as. Thank you and AMEN! 🙌🙌

I did not enjoy this. I do not believe in judging people due to their sexual preference.

    • Rocky Lagou

Neither do I. This poem speaks exactly to that, people who are against the LGBTQ+ I believe that the hate and discrimination that is targeted towards the gay community is horrible and cruel. I'd recommend re-reading the poem, this is a message for equality.

Some churches seem more tolerant of LGBTQ+ than others. They might range from 'Hellfire and damnation to ya!' to 'Come in, all are truly welcome'.

      • Rocky Lagou

I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh, but this respone truly got me good, and it's because of the reality of it. It's so strange to see how the same faith can be so disperesed and scattered among its own people. It is never okay to judge or hate on others on the simple basis of who they like or what they identify as. I hope this storyline was able to transmit that thought successfully. After all, like Edna would say, "who they hurtin’?" Thanks a bunch for your consideration, have a wonderful day!

This was a spectacular write, Rocky!!! We are all equals in Gods eyes so theres no judgement there. I have family members and friends who are LGBTQ+ and i love them all the same.

Hello dear Christina! I knew you would come through, thank you so much for taking this poem into consideration and for appreciating it. It truly means so much to me. I've noticed that not everyone is too "fond" of my pro-LGBTQ+ poetry and that honestly kind of scares me. But what you say is true, "we are all equals in God's eyes." So despite what others have to think, we are loved. And we should own up to our differences and embrace others. I hope this narrative got you into the whole "country vibe" I was going for. I wanted it to be intriguing but also meaningful. Have a blessed day!

Right now there's a plague of woke-ingitus. Don't pay no attention to those religious types they cant even agree shit between themselves, theyre just self righteous ego maniacs.
Any crowd of wierdos who rally around effigies of a semi naked bloke nailed to a cross is a pretty disgusting bunch if you ask me anyway.
There's even one of them christians writing about opening god's book on MPS today. Poor misguided chap thinks it's the words of god. Them christians cant even get the 4th commandment right - remember the sabbath etc - sabbath is a saturday but they bent god's rules and made it a sunday LOL hypocrits the ;lot of them.

          • Rocky Lagou

Being "woke" in a time like this is probably the biggest sign of kindness ever. Thank you for your sincerity and blunt frankness.

Sorry , deleted my comment . Just read your poem again and can’t say I completely understand how you have expressed yourself and I’m not even sure the message comes across properly . Just to be honest . But I like that yoir trying to write about something that isn’t fair .. judgement , discrimination . I have been judged before I believe for my mental health problems and no it is never nice . Good for you . To try and write something related to something which isn’t fair .. discrimination . I think I wrote a poem once about mental health

All my long life | have treated all with respect no matter what there sexual preferences were. Respect for individuals seems to have been abandoned by so many people.

            Andy

            • Rocky Lagou

So true Andy, respect for others has honestly disintegrated. It's like people can't see past the surface of someone's character and decides to judge and criticize them on the basis of their preference, identity, color, etc... That is why this poem works to reveal these prejudice mindsets and bring them to light, to show that it is in now way okay to hate on others because of such trivial qualities. Thank you so much for your kindness, have a wonderful day!
