Why?

Bella Shepard

Ignorance is bliss?

Ignorance is dangerous

Ignorance doth kill!

Silence is golden?

Silence to, is dangerous

Silence also kills!

Today there was yet another school shooting, this time in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 children and 2 teachers were killed by an 18 year old gunman who bought 2 assault rifles on his last birthday.  Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors NBA team, gave voice, with passion and courage to the rage and overwhelming grief that I think everyone is feeling.

the world has become a dangerous place to live in not just because of people who does wrong but even more because of the society that ignores such acts. indeed! such a powerful message, you have expressed with an exquisite flow of words.

    • Bella Shepard

Thank you so much dear friend for such compassionate words. It's hard to understand the world we live in today. I don't recognize my own country, and the best I can hope for is to use my vote and whatever voice I have.

      • Aradhya

yes same here, in our country also. the whole government is playing the same tune under a single political family, 3/4 th of the country economy is controlled by them and protesters are killed! really a very very dark time the world has faced! your words truly and accurately interpret a very brilliant message, Bella bravo!

It seems the USA need not worry about terrorist attacks, americans of all backgrounds are killing each other off without help from terrorists.

P.S. It's not guns which kill people, it's the ammunition.

        • Bella Shepard

My friend your words ring all too true. Watching the 24/7 news channels is like reading a dystopian novel. This country is in true crisis. We've let the fire burn out of control, and at this point almost impossible to contain.

          • dusk arising

Well take away the ammunition and this crazy 18 year old would have to use a less efficient way of demonstrating his murderous intent and considering that that would take a lot longer maybe there would be a few more children still alive right now. Yes murderers were murdering long before firearms were invented but they could not kill so many so quickly. The ammunition penetrating the body is the thing which is killing so many. If that kid could not have got his hands on the weapons then the youngsters would still be alive even if he still had wanted to kill them all.

true, and this person would have ended up hurting somebody without access to a gun, but this was definitely the worst thing that could have happened and could have been prevented. I don't know how he got access to an assault rifle but either, he legally purchased it, which i mean, he was capable of acquiring it and he knew perfectly well what he was doing , and most likely knew that it was wrong, but it was also the fault of whoever sold him the gun, and/or the fault of the law makers in the area in which he bought the weapon, for not doing a thorough mental health evaluation beforehand. And if it was a case where he had access to the gun by either someone he knew, or family member or someone he lived with, it's partially that person's fault for not being responsible for either A: not securing their weapons well enough and letting someone who is mentally ill and at risk of hurting themself or others have access to the gun, or B: willingly letting this person have access to it. I'm not saying that the guy who did it is not at fault here, because these factors do not in any way take the blame off of him. But I think we can all agree that things could have been done to prevent this. And that goes for almost all of the incidents like this. Especially ones where it was younger people who committed the crime.

I'd refer you back to my initial comment made to Bella Shepherd about her poem.

                • Velma Ruth

So do you think that everyone should be stripped of their constitutional right to own firearms just because the government doesn't know how to make proper and more strict gun laws and regulations?

                  • dusk arising

Write a poem about it and maybe I'll comment.

                    • Velma Ruth

                      ouch

                      • Bella Shepard

My dear friends, I think we can hopefully agree that gun ownership should be responsible. The closest we can hope to come to any kind of solution is for our elected leaders to work together and find common ground. Unfortunately they seem to have lost the art of discussion and compromise. Having come of age in the 60's I remember a time when politicians, of both parties, were able to argue, disagree, have heated debates, compromise, and actually get meaningful things done, then at the end of the day go out for a beer together. Many of both parties were friends. There are good arguments on both sides of this issue that should be heard and debated to find a reasonable solution that will benefit all Americans. The bottom line is that no parent should be afraid to send their child to school, and no child should be afraid of being there. Thank you both for you passion and points of view, I would expect no less from our loving, caring, creative community of poets. Emotions will always run high in times of pain and grief, but I think that our better angels will always prevail.

                      • Rocky Lagou

When I woke up to these news, my mind went straight to the Parkland Shooting that happened just a few miles from where I used to live. My heart is so heavy to know that these types of massacres are still occuring at alarming rates. We can truly only hope for better days.

                        • Bella Shepard

Dear Rocky, We share the collective heaviness of heart and the weeping has only just begun. Let's hope that somehow our elected officials find the courage, the fearlessness to stand up to the gun lobby and put aside political ambitions to do something for the good of all, and not just for their moneyed donors.

A powerful message presented through an impressive use of language. This is truly the downfall of humanity. Such a pathetic sight😔

                        • Rozina

A terrible tragedy AGAIN. The Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania Australia1996 led to the historic gun control act in Australia. I wonder what it will take in USA. Your lines show your despair, your grief. I am so sorry too.

                          • Bella Shepard

Thank you dear Rozina for your insightful and caring words. Commentators on our Public Broadcasting Radio were discussing the massacre in Australia the day after our shooting. They pointed out that politicians from both sides recognized the need to keep this from happening again, and were willing and able to come together to enact historic gun control act for the good of all. Unfortunately in our country law makers from both sides rarely if ever talk to each other. You really have to wonder what they would consider enough of a tragedy to break the deadlock and actually do something. I always have hope, because hope floats!

The gun culture in the USA is dreadful Bella, surely guns should not be allowed for all to buy.

                            • Bella Shepard

Dear Andy, I've given up trying to understand our gun culture. What I do know is that gun and ammo manufacturers are making a mint, supported by the NRA(National Rifle Association), and the NRA is a huge donor of the Republican Party. Laws have been enacted, then repealed down the road. There are so many loopholes you could drive a bus through. We have a lot of paranoia coming from people spreading false information, the works. Our country is going through a really rough patch, actually more of a mine field, but we'll get through it, we always have. Thank you so much for your concern and thoughtfulness, I know better days are to come.

                              • Goldfinch60

May those better days be with you soon Bella.

                                Steve summed it up.
How the hell can you be allowed to buy assault rifles. Does no one ask questions, does no one do background checks. Some shootings are preventible, and if checks were done, this would be one of them. 19 kids killed because the law allows lunatics to buy rifles.

                                • Bella Shepard

What I see is that politicians who are heavily funded by the gun lobby go to great lengths to keep those donors happy, that they may stay in power. It\'s a very sad commentary on the state of our country when those who hold that power deliberately create an atmosphere of mistrust and paranoia among the people they are supposed to serve for their own selfish gains. Bill Clinton signed a 10 year assault weapons ban in 1984 which expired in 1994 and Republicans have never allowed it to be renewed since they've been in power. They have not relented. But they can\'t stay in power forever and I have very high hopes that this will change as more and more people see through this smoke screen. Thank you for your heartfelt concern and understanding, we just need it to spill over here.

Why? Yes a complicated question, though only three letters long. Access to guns by those that shouldn't have them, troubled individuals that go undetected, lack of parental monitoring, video games that encourage killing and criminality. A question that goes unanswered.

                                  • Bella Shepard

Thank you my friend for your comment. The age old question Why? There is a glimmer of hope. There was another shooting roughly a week after Ulvade, and the two sides are beginning to talk some kind of modest legislation. Even modest would be a start at this point. I guess tiny steps are better than no steps.

such a dreadful, largely unavoidable and unnecessary tragedy .. some things never change and some things most surely must ................... Neville
