It came to my attention
Some years ago
My best friend revealed to me
That he was not so
He scoffed at my poetic pen
That real men don’t write poetry
And what does it take to be a real man?
Resisting the pull of gravity?
Without a doubt
A poet must contemplate
A relationship with inner Muse
A partnership to negotiate
An expression of sorts
Emotions lurking in the heart
Love, passion, pain, dreams
Aspirations from the start
Unafraid to think outside the box
To follow your Muse’s lead
From as little as one word or idea
Grow a poem from a tiny seed
Confidence feeding upon itself
Believing in your ability
That words can appear from thin air
Building on your stability
And before you know it
You’re well on your way
Look back on what you’ve written
And a poet you think you’ll stay
Heed not the critics quips
For what do they know of writing?
As they make a great subject
Poetry they are inviting
Songwriters are poets too
Dylan, McCartney and Denver
Made famous because they wrote
Words in a poetic manner

In life there is always someone willing to pull us down, they don't want to believe that we actually enjoys doing something such as writing, most likely because they do even less. A good way of losing friends in my opinion. 🌹
Well Teddy, in the case of my ex-best friend, I think that his ego and masculinity was threatened by my writing a poem. And that's even though the poem was about something that we both enjoyed very much, driving and owning a muscle car. Muscle cars, for a guy, a masculine interest as they have high performance engines and are powerful with beautiful body lines (much like a woman) all of which men are normally attracted to. But he chose to smirk at my poem as though he disapproved of it. Hint big boy: if you care about your best friend, don't disrespect him or expect you won't have a best friend much longer. Sorry for bending your ear Teddy, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. 😉👍
Such true words AP, men shouldn't cry either but I write and I cry as I am a very emotive person and emotive people are so strong in this world we now live.
Andy
Yes Andy, just because a man cries doesn't mean that he's weak. What it does show is that he is human and on occasion all humans experience emotions that will cause their eyes to leak. It's a bodily function that allows that human to cope with what its dealing with emotionally. Thanks for reading and commenting Andy. 😉👍
Good write AP.
KP could write poetry. Of course, the poems would only be on one theme: 'Me, me, me!' Meaning KP, not me myself. Oh, you know what I mean. Do shut up now Orchi, says Fido! lol.
I know you think I know what you mean, but do you think you know what you mean that think what you mean that you thought what I mean? 🫤
That sounds like: Was that the thought you thought today, or did you forget you thought it, etc, etc!
I forgot about it tomorrow. 😁
There's that ditty - Tomorrow is the day you worried about yesterday, or something like that. Goldfinch on here know it.
Depending on where you park your butt at what time, tomorrow could be yesterday. 🫤
Completely agree with every line.
Thanks for reading and commenting Tom. There are some of us all on the same page. 😉👍
this unquestionable truth will come as an eye opener to some no doubt .. but was crying out to be writ .. & you have argued our case so eloquently .. and it sits so pretty on the page .. tis indeed prettier than a lot of my friends wives .. Neville 😉🌹👍
Thanks N, Well I consider us friends, but I'm divorced so I guess I'm off the hook on that one. 😁
Great write AP
I kept it quiet that I was trying to write from my mates for years
Pride ? Ego? Fear? Dunno
Until I wrote an acrostic for one of their new borns
Loved this subject
Thanks Peto, I guess some people just see things differently than others. Mostly I think lots of men see writing poetry as not being masculine enough and their ego would deflate if they were to write poetry. But as I stated in my poem, there are many men songwriters like Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and John Denver. And songwriting is just glorified poetry. Its all beautiful. 👍
This poem beautifully captures the journey of self-discovery and acceptance within the realm of poetry. It's like a gentle reminder that being a poet isn't just about writing words; it's about embracing emotions, exploring the depths of the heart, and daring to think outside the box. The imagery of the poet's relationship with their inner Muse is so vivid and relatable, reminding us of the importance of creativity and vulnerability in the artistic process. With each stanza, it's as if the poem is guiding us on a journey of self-discovery, urging us to believe in our ability to create something beautiful out of thin air. And the mention of famous songwriters as poets too adds an extra layer of depth, reminding us that poetry comes in many forms and can touch our souls in unexpected ways. This poem is such a heartfelt tribute to the power of poetry and the resilience of the human spirit. Great work!
Wow, thank you Cloie for such a detailed and positive review of my poem. You get an A+ for attention to detail. 😉👍
To say that real men are not poets is to say that real men are blind. Being sensitive to one's feelings and environment seems not only wise but most primitively man like. As a hunter and warrior sensitivity to one's environment was critical. What of Homer, Solomon, Shakespeare, they weren't men. Poetry is at the heart of what it is to be human.
Thank you soren, yes I agree with you and you've hit the proverbial nail on the head here that my ex-best friend obviously had no clue of. The male ego has a lot to learn about relating to other people.
