The Look
She looked at him,
then turned
away again fast ..
Like he was
just one more old
man in a
very large crowd ..
But then he
was just another
old man in a
very long row of
standard
issue white metal
hospital beds
and he knew that ..
And as well
as the look that
she gave him
in passing, maybe
it would
have been kinder
and easier
for them both
if she had
just turned away
and not
smiled at him like
that since ..
He knew that look
only too
well perhaps ..
Indeed, it was one
of those
knowingly over
familiar
quasi-flirtatious
yet still
uncomfortable
looks
reserved for all
those on
whom empathy
could not
possibly be wasted ..
He had used it
himself
countless times on
those who
probably hadn’t
that much time left ..

The elicit that is scant hope can disproportionately intoxicate such that no matter our prep or resolve it still will win next Time, an emotion oft deemed worst only because dislike of prolonged torment is deemed definitive. I vociferously reject that supposition offering the logic of an argument that requires one to look past lewd content. I just chickened out so Iβm leaving it there!
Granted, that'll do for now .. π
It happens so often Neville, that look can bring many memories from many people.
Andy
I'll take your word for it .. for now
Good write N.

A smile - everything, access, a chance...or nothing. Little doubt which this was. Insight here to something hard to express, even if I wanted or needed to.
Thanks, Neville.
Cheers Dave .. Neville
A new watch or clock that may be more accurate than those now available on the market. Sad and in that all too human.
Aye, but I still prefer each of my Longines .. Neville
Alas, flirtation is too tantalizing in myriad instances, the coy half turn but natural, yet how you render it so exquisitely with a delicious delicacy which haunts the deeply poignant moment. Thank you for sharing.
it had to be done ..
Quasi flirtations appear to humanise us in a sterile and anonymous existence.
I was going to suggest the very same thing ππ

Excellent write Nevilie
I wonder what you might write in response if I should ever write nothing but shite ..
I grew up on a farm . Shite is fertilizer and helps plants grow. So your words may have been shite. But it can be used as fertilizer for the next one you write. That is way I liked it.
A wonderful write, my friend! I read it, liked it, faved it, then had an appointment. Now, I am commenting! I know that "look" and you've nailed it. Thanks for sharing! ππΉ
Bless you Tristan .. it seems you made my day yesterday already .. Neville ππ
Even though I'm still very young I think know that look very well ! You expressed every emotion perfectly! Beautiful work !!
Then I value your review & shall treasure it .. thank you Neilton .. Neville
This scenario played out before my eyes and in slow motion. Timing can be so cruel canβt it, particularly when the clock is ticking. A smile can be everything, a certain look, now that is something else altogether. Thereβs a time and a place for everything. This poem made me feel sad. I hope Iβve read you right my friend.
You invariably do Cassie .. bless you π
