i spied an old man sip his beer
his eyes were glazed full cloudy day
oblivious to all around
he didn’t hear the raucous sound
of other drinkers loud at play
i watched him as he raised his glass
i didn’t miss a tear that fell
that trickled down his weathered skin
i felt another’s suffering
his sadness wrapped me in its spell
where was he in his troubled mind
for sure he wasn’t here with us
his shirt was stained his hair unkempt
i pondered where his thinking went
he drank his pain with little fuss
my thoughts returned to you and i
the reaper is a friend to none
for when you’ve lost your trusted mate
you lose your compass and your fate
lies in the stars your present gone

What a very beautifully rendered illustration of Billy Joel's song! Empathy with delicate imagery and such a subtly haunting poignancy! Thank you very much for sharing, Ma'am. Timely and lovely as your wont.
Thank you dear Missy. I will check out your link.
Ah, witnessed that and been there myself a couple of times or so. A singular moment such as this can perpetual use a feeling, often I forget that we move on and this is part of a many segmented process, our privilege to witness it and document it through poetry is divine, and at times also feels like trespassing into anotherโs space. I suppose in other forms, stream of consciousness is quite an insight. Thanks for sharing this tender piece. ๐๐ป
Thank you arqios. Pleased you enjoyed.

Such emotive words Cassie, I was that man when my wife died five years ago. I have been so lucky though as I now have Mary in my life.

You are very welcome
So deeply beautiful in poetic verse, loneliness, in my early 20's I felt like this, I was lost and alone, I can certainly relate, I even went to the pub alone, your imagery has made me incredibly emotional. Kudos dear Cassie. ๐น
I too felt like that in my early twenties when my parents moved hundreds of miles away and I was in an unfamiliar setting with a small baby. I can see it in the eyes. I recognize it. Thank you dear Teddy. Have a beautiful day. ๐น
