For the Princes of the Alleys

Thomas W Case

Ferrel cats creep
under porches
to escape the
rain and snow.
Some have half
a tail
or a missing ear.
My cats watch
them from the
safety of
the warm house.
They chirp, and
stare.

I wonder if
these pitiful
orphans once had
a home and
knew love.
Did the owner
abandon them to
be unburdened by
empathy.

I wish I could
save those wild
cats,
those princes of
the alleys.

Sometimes, they wander
over to my porch.
I put a can of
tuna out.
They look at
me with cautious
green or golden eyes.
I tell them,
it’s going to be
Alright.
I know it’s a
lie.
Winter is coming.
But I feel
better for a second.
And that’s all that
matters in this
playground of a
world.

Wow profoundly powerful. This poem works both in the literal sense as well as point us to question something even broader. Well done with this, my friend! 🌹👏

A wonderful poem of empathy and kindness and yes this metaphor goes deeper than the skin of the cat. It applies to all in this world. You last words carry a foreboding message that now is all we have

A little though, kindness and giving can make a big difference, highlighted well in this piece, enjoyed the read.

I'm not such a fan of cats but I suppose the big fat fluffy ones are cute, love the way you have written this dear Thomas, your imagery is wonderful. And yes if I could save some souls I would 🌹

I;m a dog person and this works just as well for our caninr friends - in these cold frozen days I also make sure our feathered friends have plenty on the bird table. Its the least we humans can do as temporary custidians of the future

  • Tom Dylan

A moving poem, Thomas. And love the title.

  • Dan Williams

Hooray for you. This is a subject too often unreported and ignored. People's misconceptions and carelessness with cats, even more than with dogs, is tragic. I have actually been told that "men don't have cats". Same people will cry about homelessness.

    • Thomas W Case

      Yes, so true. Thanks, Dan.

Wild cats were all we ever knew growing up, the especially feral ones rarer but our purring friends likewise, more especially since Mum didn't like house cats. I love cats so dearly I've been adorning my walls with their photos since high school. If only I could land a free kitten or two it'd be even more fun. Thank you so very, very much for this charming piece on them!!! Beautifully rendered with excellent imagery and a haunting, charming poignancy. I love it!
