Highgate Cemetery

Cassie58

through a colonnade we see

how green the ivy and the ferns

grow in this shaded avenue

where trees have seeded over years

to shelter mourners left in tears

vines entwine where lichen clings

to monuments of chiseled stone

angels bow their heads in sadness

others lift their wings in gladness

influence of far off Egypt

Redgrave, Marx and Mahler’s daughter

Grecian urns or Celtic crosses

all the faiths have suffered losses

magnifique this ornate splendour

only for the richest people

yet the dead i sense some linger

and their shadows point a finger

carvings mingle in with flora

little cherubs trumpet loudly

Gothic style on family tombs

while gloom descends on catacombs

and someone has tiptoed over

Pandora’s grave

time to leave

So it is as creepy as pictures and descriptions of it say?! There's a ghostly Swains Lane on one side that I read about. I've never been there myself.

Well worth a visit. If you go, book a guided tour. An amazing place. Wouldn’t want to be there in the dark though. Thanks Orchi.

Bring together history, and different cultures and faiths all in a single cemetary and what better setting indeed. The mention of Pandora's grave despite it being a friend that was with you speaks metaphor and what better for a graveyard. Very nicely worded Cassie

An amazing place. By day so very peaceful. Parts of it a wilderness. The Victorians did death so well lol. Wouldn’t want to be there in the dark. Pleased you enjoyed this older poem sorenbarrett. Thank you kindly.

Oh my, you have really out done yourself with this one dearest. Cassie, ive seen many types of burying sights, I've also seen the catacombs up close, I have a couple of friends who's hobby is going to see famous ones too, here in Florence we have the British cemetery which always reminds me of home, only the rich can be buried there, and the public cemeteries look like school lockers somewhat, but what is amazing is they are lit by candle at night fake candle light but it really is a sight to see. I found this magnificent in imagery especially the angels with trumpets line. My closest cemetery to my family now in London is West Norwood. 🌹 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇮🇹🌹

Thank you for your lovely review Teddy. Some of these old burial places are truly amazing. Highgate was incredible. A Victorian cemetery, mainly for the very wealthy. The monuments to the dead are complete works of art. Well worth a visit. I visited catacombs when in Sicily and Malta. Your cemeteries lit up at night, must be beautiful. We don’t have anything like that here. I don’t know West Norwood in London, I will have to look it up. Pleased you enjoyed this poem. 🌹🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🌹🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🌹

Oh, dearest Cassie, now I really have to find my way back to London to visit this hauntingly beautiful cemetery. Again, knowing me, I am not sure how I avoided it the first time 'round, but it is very much on my to-do list now! Thank you for the glimpse of it from your POV. A wonderful poem, friend! 🌹👏

                • Cassie58

Hello Tristen, so pleased you enjoyed my visit to Highgate Cemetery. It truly is an amazing place. The monuments and the memorials to the departed are incredible works of art. Many famous names buried there. Wouldn’t want to visit in the dark. It’s eerie enough in daylight. Many thanks for your review. All the best.

A fine write. Really enjoyed. I have never visited that cemetery but it is on my list. Some fascinating characters buried there. Another one on my list is Pere Lachaise in Paris. I would love to see the graves of Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison.

                      • Cassie58

Love me a good cemetery. There is that in between feeling of serenity and wistfulness before the creepy and spooky chapter begins…

                            • Cassie58

Many thanks arqios. Apologies for late response. Serenity and creepy apply so well here. .
