Sorry if there is a delay in responses. Sometimes life gets in the way. As John Lennon said, life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.
My oldest friend clapped her hands
for attention, she had news to share
she would be holding her birthday party
on Saturday and she wanted me to be there.
Oh please say you’ll come, she says,
you really would be missed.
When I get to the party that night,
my name isn’t on the list.
As the door-men re-checked the guest-list,
I was filled with dread,
when I repeated and then spelled my name,
they just shook their heads.
Maybe I should have called her,
maybe I should have said,
maybe then finally I’d be allowed to pass,
my face burning red.
But it was so embarrassing and so awkward
I will never live down the shame
of standing on the nightclub doorstep
while they searched for my name.
I’m sure it was some oversight
that she never meant to offend
but these things always happen to me,
and she’s supposed to be my friend.
I am going to throw quite the party
when my birthday comes around
and I’m going to invite her along,
but her name will not be down.
Of course not, I wouldn’t dream of it,
that feeling was just the worst,
Instead I’ll write a poem about it
and have my revenge in verse.

A much more pleasant way of getting over the embarrassment, enjoyed the read
Exactly! Thanks so much for your comments.
You are very welcome
Doh! Did you 'over-stay your welcome'? Did you say 'I'll get my coat (and be gone)', as the sayings go?
Haha, yeah, I was just like, okay then, point taken. Thanks as always for your comments, mate.
Boohoo! Were you not invited in the first place? At least, you were not on the list. Doh!
Great poem - gave me a smile.
Thanks, Michael. Really appreciated. Cheers, Tom.
Oh wow, that is quite cathartic to read through. I've been unwelcome and uninvited and a whole lot of other un-s before. Poeming these might be just what's needed.... (diabolical laughter) ππ«₯π₯³
Thanks so much, yeah, they say never p*ss off a writer. We get our own back in our writing. And I could hear the diabolical laughter from here! Nice one, mate.
I know that more than I care too! Burn, burned, burning, burnt even... Such is life. Cya 'round the site Tom! πποΈ
Highly inventive this poem takes a common situation and makes it unique. I think that in metaphor we have all felt left out at times whether invitations or just conversations and feeling of vengence surge but hopefully never come to fruition. Well rhymed and set up this poem told the story well and deserves a Fave
Yes, I took my disgruntlement and put it in a poem. π Thanks as always for your comments and the fave, Soren. Really appreciated.
Wow! That sucks! What doesn't though, is the reminder I need to start getting back into spoken word and open-mics. Thanks for that inspiration. Hopefully, though, my name won't be left off the list. π€ Glad you turned into a poem. The best form of revenge in my mind! It lasts a lot longer!
Thanks a lot for your comments, Tristan. Really appreciated. Good luck with the open mic. Hope your name is on the list!
Me too! I will let you know if I have a similar experience, for sure! You are welcome, Tom!
Excellent. Success is the best revenge.
Thanks a lot, my friend. Really appreciate your comments.
Your name will be on my list Tom. LOL.
Andy
Nice one, Andy. That is good to know. Thanks for your comments, mate.
Fine Poem . As for the βOpen Micβ, next time put your name down as Simon Armitage: then watch their faces when he doesnβt turn up.
Haha, fantastic! I might try that. π Thanks for your comments.
That feeling of mortification was more than justified under the circumstances mate .. I Presume it really woz an accident and not some strategic way of getting back at you over summat and nothing π€
It was actually a spoken word poetry evening I put my name down for and was left off the list. I will not be going back but decided to write a poem inspired by it. I think my poems will be having a more online rather than live outlet from now on.
Nothing like finding you've apparently made an application, not signed on to entertain. Nothing like thinking you're in the company of friends, only to find that was a misnomer. La dee! How expertly rendered with superb clarity, excellent imagery and a seriously haunting poignancy. Thank you very much for sharing!
Yes it was a bit of an eye-opener! Thank you so much for your comments. Really appreciated, my friend.
