Poetry Shouldn't

Tom Dylan

Notice of absence from Tom Dylan
Sorry if there is a delay in responses. Sometimes life gets in the way. As John Lennon said, life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

Poetry shouldn’t be read

like a shopping list

or a text message,

like a newspaper headline,

or that recipe for spag-bol,

or a social media post.

Poetry should be read

like wedding vows

or raising a glass for a funeral toast

or congratulations it’s a girl

or when my wife says

love, I’ve been thinking.

Yes, and if shorter poems, they may focus us more. Yet at times longer poems can do - say 5,347 verses or something! lol. No need to go mad over it.

    • Tom Dylan

Yes, Orchi, exactly that. Some short poems really pack a punch. Cheers, Tom.

It's both an art and a skill, just as crafting a poem so is the reading (constructing.deconstructing - to be sterile and technical, but not) You're on fire Tom šŸ™šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ•Šļø!

      • Tom Dylan

That is a good point. The reading of a poem is a skill just as writing one. Thanks so much for the encouragement. Really appreciated.

Much welcome my friend! Hope all is well your way šŸ‘šŸ™šŸ»šŸ•Šļø

A great and too often neglected message in this poem. I agree whole heartedly. The meaning of the poem is not just in its rhyme, but in its wording, pacing and meter as well intonation and emphasis. Like a song that can be sang note perfect it is different when sang from the soul with soul. Very nice

Yes, this occurred to me so decided to try and write about it. Thanks so much for your comments, Soren. Really appreciated.

I feel it is pointless reading a poem if you are not going to try and understand it, i am learning it takes time to work out some pieces of work( even i do not always get it, but i try). It is also what the author deserves, time and effort has gone into writing it after all, enjoyed the read

            • Tom Dylan

Yes, that is exactly it. I wrote this poem, kinda to myself, to tell myself, that if I do not crack a poem first time of reading, I should take a step back, and read it again with the proper mindset. Thanks as always for your comments. Really appreciated.

                You are very welcome

Expression is everything when reading poetry, as is timing. Been a while since I read at open mic. It takes practice. Some people have the advantage of a great voice. Iā€™m not one of them. Enjoyed your composition here Tom. Made me reflect. Happy Tuesday.

Thanks a lot for your comments, Cassie. Really appreciated. Happy Tuesday to you too. Cheers, Tom.

So true Tom, poetry must be inhaled.

Exactly, Andy. Or maybe sipped with a little ice! šŸ™‚ Thanks, Tom.

A Wonderful way of saying how Poetry should be expressed. Good one.
