You Make My Day

Cheeky Missy

(sonnet attempt # XXII)

XXII

I was alive before you came and yet,
I'd die if I had to bid you adieu.
How strange and contradictory, say you?
And yet it seems so true. Before we met
I did not know what life could mean; you let
Me see a diff'rent world. If you withdrew,
So colourless and lifeless it'd ensue.....
My life would be then but a silhouette.
You say no one is worth such honour, eh?
...But God. And there you're right. But yet I plead.
Effect for good or ill we all display;
Nor to ourselves alone does this proceed:
To others ev'ry day we thus hold sway
To make or break....and you make mine, you see!

  • Comment from author about the poem: Talking to a dear friend, reflecting on how empty life suddenly was when she was briefly lost to us 1.5 years ago, I began to compose....while that thought initiated it, the rest grew out of considering what significance dear ones mean to our lives..... Oh, and here's the killer....she's a bird!
