If we were children
I would make you a Valentine
Uneven red paper heart
With a tiny hand print
A little poem scrawled on the front
If we were old and dying
I would lie down next to you
And wrap my arms around your shoulders
Close my timeworn eyes
And die happily that way
If we were prince and princess
I would beg my father
To allow you to court me
And we would set off
Through the gardens of the palace
If we were in a fairytale
I would throw a ball
Only you would be invited
And we would dance and dance
As our wings lifted us higher
If we were us
I would make you a Valentine
I would wrap my arms around you
We would dance forever and ever
And I would love you always
