- Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this years ago after reading about paintings and photos being lies. Chuck Close said "Painting is a lie....It makes space where there is no space. There is a Stapleton Kearns quote about a painting a nature scene: " I want to make nature conform to something it is not". Picasso-"Art is a lie that tells the truth." In many photos the "reality" is staged for the photo. Think of your Christmas card photos. From an article by Debra Brehmer, Every Portrait Tells a Lie she comments, "Our existence is transitional and subjective and this is the condition that portraiture tries to absolve." Hence, that moment in a person's life no longer exists. We are looking at something that is basically lying to us. I wanted a poem to stand, exist for itself---to represent only itself, not to be about or allude to anything, just itself, simply to exist. I am not quite sure that is possible.

Just 11 words say so much - Love this simple piece
Very true "A" ~ However "No MAN is an Island !" If I ignore your pithy poem you still exist to write another ~ BUT ~ If I do read ~ and comment your existence is justified and it make writing the next poem (people are screaming ~ DON'T ENCOURAGE HIM !) a little easier ! Yours BRIAN
Thanks for reading and commenting. It was an interesting existencial experiment.
Short and wonderfully written and expressed great write
Thank for the praise Tony.
Welcome
Amazing what you do with so few words, Augustus! Love it!
In a few words, thank you Christina.
a deep write here my friend..
Thanks Wordman.
I am impressed! I do not think of myself as someone who can stand for a while and gaze at a painting. I love Norman Rockwell, so I guess that says something about me. I appreciate colors in paintings that really bring out sunshine or darkness and am always amazed by the talent. It is up to to each individual to interpret what they are looking at and either to like it or not. Great point Augustus.
Great comment. Thanks WBL
a simplistic deeply philosophical write!
