I DO LOVE TO VISIT ~ THE US of A ~ A Villanelle

BRIAN & ANGELA

I do love to visit the US of A

I can only manage three States a year

But most of the States seem the same today

Malls and McDonalds and six lane highway

For America past I shed a tear ~ but

I do love to visit the US of A

Iowa's slow and Texas too fast ~ so they say

And Alaska is frozen for most of the year

But most of the States seem the same today

Brits go to Florida ~ sunny and gay

Arizona ~ Nevada ~ to wear cowboy gear ~ but

I do love to visit the US of A

New York  New York ~ where I'll spend all my pay

New Mexico ~ no different from the old one ~ I hear

But most of the States seem the same today

Love Hawaii ~ there for a year I'd stay

Or Michighan ~ cold in the Winter ~ I fear ~ but

I still do love the US of A

But most of the States seem the same today

Thanks for visiting ~ comment welcome ~ Love BRIAN

  • Comment from author about the poem: The Villanelle is an old French style of poetry ~ with repetition to give emphasis to the Title Line and the main theme of the the Poem. In this example ~ Visiting the United States of America ! There are only two "rhymes" so you have to chose a good rhyming word in the first two lines. In this case "A" and YEAR ~ if you chose a rhyming word like ORANGE you are in real trouble ! Why not try one for yourself. Lines may be of any length but most of mine are in iambic pentameter to give the poem more "flow" when read ! Comments welcome ~ Love to all especially Americans ~ whatever State you find yourself in today ! A Texas Hug from BRIAN XOX

I'm going to visit England and Scotland and Ireland end of this 2017 summer!

    • BRIAN & ANGELA

THANKS ~ You will really enjoy it Willy ! England & Scotland did elect LADIES as First Ministers ~ so all is sweetness and light and NO restrictions on visitors or immigrants. US of A under Hillary would have been Really Great again ! BRIAN

Trump is making it great for liars and Russians? Go comrade Trumpski!!hooray!

I love my country. Nice one Brian.

        • BRIAN & ANGELA

YES INDEED HONEY ~ You have every right to be proud ! It is 40 times bigger than the UK but you only have 5 times our population so each American has 8 times more space and it shows !. I actually find each State like a different Country (Climate ~ Scenery ~ Accent ~ Attitude ~ Cuisine etc !) It is BILL BRYSON who complains every American is becoming A McPERSON and all the Malls are the same ! Vive la Difference ! Pleased you liked the Villanelle ! Texas Hugs ~ BRIAN

Reading through this fine villanelle I am now more than ready to visit those faraway places so well described Brian. First rate write.

          • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks FAY despite my A2 line I find each State different in all sorts of ways epecially attitude ! It is BILL BRYSON who says all the Malls are the same and that every American is morphing into a McPERSON ! Thanks for your encouraging comment ! Yours B

Welcome, You should vist the state of Missouri some time

              • Michael Edwards

Love the construction Brian but a bit daunting to have a go.

                • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks Michael ~ They are a bit harder than they look 1. Decide on a good end rhyming word for A1 and B 2. Write A1 A2 and B 3. Lay the poem out in 19 lines and fill in all the A1's and A2's 4. That only needs 5 A lines and 5 B lines to complete ~ EASY ! Yours BRIAN

Good write, I have never been to the USA but y elder granddaughter has and she loved it, especially Oklahoma and when she has completed her Masters she intends to go to Oklahoma to do her PhD. Maybe I will be able to visit her.

                  • BRIAN & ANGELA

Ohhhhhhhhhhh MY FRIEND ~ You rally must try to go. OKLAHOMA is one of the great plains States and Oklahoma city is a great place to stay. Every blessing ~ Yours BRIAN

Yeah personally I can't wait to leave the US because once I turn 18 and done with highschool I'm going to take all the money I've saved and saving to travel the world. By myself because the US is filled with ass holes who are so full of themselves. Although not all places are like it. I mean Missouri isn't that bad, but the weather changes all the time. It could be sunny in the morning and snowing in the evening. It's possible and It's happened before. Though with Trump as president I'm not sure I'll be able to travel the world. Hope you have a fun time traveling to the whole US. This is a great poem. Love it!

                    • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks WG7 ~ Well at 3 Sates a year it will take about 17 years ! I have visited about 15 so far and stayed in about 8 so I'm getting there' Take care when travelling alone ! Thanks for your comment ~ thinking of you ~ BRIAN

                    • Christina8

This was a really clever rhyme- never heard of a villanelle! I promise they don't all look alike! You gotta get to some of the smaller towns to see some real beauties! Very nice poem! Hugs-Christina

                      • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks CHRIS ~ much appreciated. I'm only quoting BILL BRYSON who says all the malls look the same and all Americans are turning into McPERSONS ! It's true I do find the smaller towns have more character and individuality. Its 60F here today so all the Spring Flowers are really making an effort ! An American HUG for you ~ BRIAN

Kudos to our seasoned traveler. At this point the Vilanelle is a little too challenging for me. Nicely done.
