SAINTLY PATRICK ~ An Acrostic Sonnet

BRIAN & ANGELA

SAINT PATRICK ~ Born in Scotland in 375 AD

AS A TEEN he was kidnapped and taken to IRELAND

IN IRELAND he worked as a Shepherd for six years. He

NEVER liked being a Slave so he escaped

TO WALES where he met up with his Parents. He

LOVED GOD and the Truths of the BIBLE. He

YEARNED to be a Priest and serve GOD in the CHURCH

PATRICK travelled to FRANCE and he trained to become

A  PRIEST.  He received a direct call for GOD to return

TO IRELAND to strenghen the CHURCH and teach the FAITH. He

REACHED many people and ministered and worked

IN IRELAND for over 40 years ! Through his work IRELAND became

CHRISTIAN in 432 AD. PATRICK died in 470 AD aged 95. His

KINSHIP with IRELAND and the IRISH is celebrated on 17 MARCH

  • Comment from author about the poem: SAINT PATRICK is The Patron Saint of Ireland and St Patrick's Day is celebrated all over the World. With Church Services ~ Dinners ~ Concerts and Dances. In LIVERPOOL which has a big Irish Catholic Population the St Patrick's Dinner would be Boiled Beef and Cabbage and Irish Potatoes (boiled in their skins) or Lamb Stew. All served with Irish Scones and washed down with Irish Guinness and a Harp Lager for the Ladies ! In New York which has millions of residents of Irish descent the River is dyed GREEN on St Paddy's Day ! Comments welcome ~ Irish Love to ALL ~ BRIAN XOX

I have relatives in Ireland....sure they had z drunken day. There is a story that it wasn't snakes thar he drove out of Ireland but rather pagans and witches(by killing them) Pagans still wear snake tattoo on their arms for their fallen sisters. Just thought I'd share lol

    • BRIAN & ANGELA

THANKS JOOLES ~ The reason for the Pagan Snake Tattoo is interesting. The Irish are great story tellers and if ever you're in Dublin you're always treated to the CRAIC which is the chatter and exaggeration in the Pubs & Bars It shure is the Guinness that loosens the tongue. There are many MYTHS associated with Patrick himself ~ there never were snakes in Ireland but he drove them out anyway ! Witches were not tolerated in the 5th C (like they are today !) so St P would have had a hand in getting rid of them ! Irish Hugs ~ BRIAN ~ An Irish Hug is with ONE ARM (left) because yer always holdin' a jar o' Guinness in yer right fist ~ OK !

A good and informative write. Ahh, is that why there were no snakes in Ireland - he drove them all out? Oh, there weren't any there anyway to start with?!
I wish I would shut up - got me self confused now!
A top o' the mornin' crackin' write. Good Irish impression, yes?! heehee.

          • BRIAN & ANGELA

Great st Patty's Day acrostic. Very informative. Irish is one of the things I am not which my explain my distaste for cabbage and such. Too bad they have to go as far as to dye the rivers green. Hope you had a wonderful St Patricks Day! Hugs--Christina

THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND whose capital is DUBLIN is not of course no longr part o the UK ! It is an Independent Country and has be since 1920. Northern Island is Protestant not Catholic and is about 25% of the Island. NI is part of the UK ! In the UK we all have a bit of IRISH BLOOD so we do tend to celebrate St Patrick's Day ! Pleased you liked the POEM. By the way it's SAINT PADDY'S day and PADDY or A _PADDY is an affectionate term for any Irishman ! Irish Hugs ~ BRIAN I explained it's a left arm hug ~ because in yer right hand yer'll be holdin' yer jar o' GUINNESS ~ OK

                Cleverly done.

Thanks FRANK ~ I am a classical Poet and I like my poems to have structure as well as substance. Both the ACROSTIC (number of letters) and the SONNET (14 lines) are limiting forms ~ because SAINTLY PATRICK is 2 X 7 it lends itself to an ACROSTIC SONNET. Blank Verse compels each line to be co-syllabic which give rhythm an makes the poem a pleasure to recite ! I am a performance poet. Yous BRIAN

Kudos for working so well within structure Brian. I can't do it for the life of me - takes the pleasure out of writing for me, so I stick with storytelling in free-verse.

I've done a fair bit of open mike, but not for a few years now.

Good write. I live near Cheltenham and last week the Cheltenham Horse Racing Festival was on and during that week the Irish come over in their droves and the town and the towns and villages around the area are packed. In hte evenings you just cannot get near a pub but the one thing about it is there is never any trouble it is always very good humoured and they are so generous to all.

Thanks GF being brought up in Liverpool there was a lot of IRISH influence ~ they are a lovely people and you are immediately their brother ~ In the Republic of Ireland everyone is related to everyone else which creates a great feeling of family. If you walk into a Bar as a stranger ~ they buy you a pint ~ letyou sing your song or tell your story (the CRAIC) and if you have brought your flute you can "sit in" with the band ~ there are NO SOCIAL BARRIERS in Ireland - I love it. They were always a very big presence at the Grand National and their love of horses and "havin' a punt" is infectious ~ AMEN They are also very very religious ~ it's an internal FAITH not an external optional extra ! BRIAN.

Ireland beat England in the Rugby, they even did that good naturedly!
