Neighbour Watching

Goldfinch60

It was a beautiful Summers day,

It had arrived early in Spring.

Our neighbours came out,

The table came out from the shed,

The chairs likewise.

The parasol was opened,

Created a beautiful shade

In which they could sit out of the sun,

Sit in relative comfort.

The cups of coffee came out

And there they both sat.

This wonderful weather,

So glorious all around them,

And there they were,

Sat there in silence,

Ignoring all and everything,

All and everything of this beautiful day,

Playing with their mobile ‘phones!

  • Comment from author about the poem: This is true. While I was in the garden attacking my Nemesis (see previous poem) my next door neighbours came into the garden, after a chat with them they organised themselves as in this poem.

Good write. Maybe it's necessary in this technological age - but not all the time! It may be a sort of companion for them.

I think that it is a habit, I would be surprised to soon see an organisation to be called "Mobile 'phones anonymous"!!
      Thank you Orchi.

So few actually enjoy the environment and the beauty of nature and their lives are so much poorer for it - if only they realised.

      • Goldfinch60

Very true Michael, there is so much activity around us which they just cannot or don't want to see.

      • Fay Slimm.

There is a time and a place for these electronic devices - natural beauty has to take central stage to bequeath its wonderful benefits . Thanks for this good reminder my friend.

      • Goldfinch60

Thank you Fay, it is seen everywhere nowadays even when I am walking with nature there are people plugged into their mobiles. They miss the sound of nature completely!

Pretty annoying. The malaise if the modern.

        • Goldfinch60

          Very true. Thank you.

          Sadly true. Well done

They are missing out! I have seen that so much, in particular, with the youngsters. They are just plain missing out on the wonders of being outside in the great weather. Great write.

smart phones make for stupid people
                Goobers on parade!

                • Goldfinch60

We see them al, three time. A statue by the side of a path at Salisbury Cathedral had to be moved as it overhung the path and people kept on bumping into it because they were looking at their 'phones and not where they were going!
                  Thank you WW.

                    • Goldfinch60

I do have one but do not keep looking at it all the time as some do, and will certainly not use it in company or when out and about.

Our tongues are going to melt away as we adapt to the external mode of communication. I've seen my Millennials all four of them sitting on the sofas texting one another, not a sound of verbal utterance. My wife and I sat out today and watched the hawks hunting, so much more interesting than life with the Kardashians. Cell phones and all the other et ceteras of electronics, are murdering the language and the culture. I must admit, though, the wife and I did have our coffees. Nice one, this. Loved it.- Phil A.

Thanks Phil, coffee of course is also important. Many is the time when I have sat on the top of a hill watching natures glory around me drinking coffee.
