A FELLA WITH AN UMBRELLA ~ A Rispetto

BRIAN & ANGELA

I'M JUST A FELLA ~ A FELLA WITH AN UMBRELLA ~ WAITIN'

FOR A GIL WHO SAVED HER LOVE FOR A RAINY DAY !

UMBRELLAS  are great they repel the rain

And protect from the Sun ~ when its sunny

Very important to have one in Spain

Parasol ~ Para-aqua ~ that's so funny !

I'm really quite a chivalrous Fella

Each day I carry my black rolled umbrella

Damsel in distress ~ in thin Summer dress

My brolly raised high ~ keeps her dry ~ I guess !

Thanks for visiting ~ comments welcome ~ Love BRIAN XOX

Do you always carry a brolly ~ just in case ?

A RISPETTO is an Itallian poetic form ~ Two Quatrains

with co~syllabic lines and a rhyme pattern  abab & ccdd !

  • Comment from author about the poem: UMBRELLAS and PARASOLS ~ like so many useful everyday objects ~ were invented in CHINA thousands f tears ago. Once they were relatively expensive but now You can get a reliable one in the POUND & DOLLAR STORES ! There is no excuse to be caught GAMPLESS in a Sun shower. Most ladies do generally have a brolly concealed about their person somewhere ! My DAD is a Gentleman (like me) and he is characterised by his bespoke Overcoat ~ his trilby Hat and his black rolled Umbrella with a SILVER handle ~ a great role model for his Sons ! Consequently I always carry a BLACK ROLLED UMBRELLA ~ but with an IVORY handle. My DAD told me that sharing your brolly with a Young Lady can be quite amorous ~ and it is ! Looks to be quite a challenge keeping it co-syllabic but this is great example. In my early career in the City a rolled umbrolly was an essential piece of the male dress - yes I carried one along with dark jacket and pin striped trousers - err no I didn't carry them as well - I wore them. Grief - this dates me!!

Thanks MICHAEL for a droll comment as per usual ! My DAD is a Newspaper Man (Advertising ~ He is a great Wordsmith !) and when I was growing up at home (n the last Century) there was a stricter dress code ~ at Work and at School ! I was a CUB REPORTER (Sport) on a Saturday so I had to develop literary skills ! Because I am a Scientist (and a VIRGO) I am very disciplined which is why I try to promote Classic Poetic Form. A RISPETTO demands a strict rhyme pattern abab and ccdd and a strict meter ~ each line co-syllabic. Normally iambic tetrameter. Teresa May being a Vicar\'s Daughter ~ A Grammar School Girl and an Oxford Graduate (ST HUGH'S ~ Geography) approves of DISCIPLINE. Personally I think she is the type of Leader we need for BREXIT and Trumping TRUMP (I wanna hold your hand ........... !) What is your view on increasing the number of Grammar Schools ? Yours BRIAN

      • Michael Edwards

Grammar schools - now that's a difficult one for me. I can see all the advantages for those lucky enough to go to one. Results are so much higher - contacts are easier to access - and as consequence Uni places and job opportunities are so much better. Now comes the but - statistics show that the chances of getting in in the first place are so much greater for those of more privileged backgrounds. The option of paying for extra tuition to achieve entry level is really only open to those of greater higher income levels. Not really a fair way of selecting and many who have the ability are unable to realise it by exclusion through social circumstances.

Must agree about TM though - just what we need. Regardless of views on Brexit I do get so frustrated by the remainers who keep bleating on about the downsides of Brexit and the fact that they wanted to remain. Whether you agree or not the vote is history and their negative attitudes and continual carping can only serve to undermine morale and our chances of getting the best deal we can - we should all be working together to achieve this aim. oops dropped into politics which is not what this site is about but its nice to let off steam sometimes.

YES the other advantage of GRAMMAR SCHOOLS is that they are often UNISEX ! I know we live in a BISEXUAL SOCIETY but Sixth form teachers having to cope with raging hormones as well a Numeracy and Literacy is too much. Also G Schools deprives Comprehensive Schools of the most able pupils and the most affluent Parents. I am not in favour of PRIVATE EDUCATION but that is all about Democratic Choice like Private Health and exclusive Golf Clubs etc ! What annoys me is that PARENTS who "manipulate" their kids into Single Sex Grammars get a PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION for their kids at the States Expense ! I have done deputation work fro the YMCA Foyer taking year 9 Classes for one hour. The Girl's Grammar is Heaven and the Boys Grammar almost as good. Some of the Comps in poor areas are less so. There is a big difference but they have to sit the same GCSE's which are too easy for the Grammars and to difficult or some of the comps ~ So "on paper" the Grammars score more than 3 times better in "GCSE points per pupil" scores. Also most GRAMMARS have 6th forms so there is no disruption in the very important 16 to 18 transition for those who want to do A-levels. Comprehensive students mostly have to transfer to a Sixth Form College which can be quite traumatic and disruptive ! The GRAMMARS get the best A-level results in the State Sector ~ often better than Public Schools C'EST LA VIE ~ BRIAN

Ah, you remind me of the parasol my Aunt gave me when I was little! Great idea for a poem Brian!

THANKS HONEY ~ for your encouraging comment ! Umbrellas are great and often the word tugs a chord in somebody's memory ~ as it did in yours ! Hugs under the brolly ! BRIAN

Back in the day when it was de rigour to wear suit and tie to work I too had a black umbrella. I still have a large umbrella given to me back in the late seventies by a contractor that worked for our firm, from the day he gave it to me it has resided in the boot(s) of my cars and never been used but it is still there 'just in case'.
            Good write.

Thanks BROTHER ~ You never know when you too might meet "A Damsel in distress in a UK thunderstorm !" I always carry a brolly in the car ~ "just in case" Your BRIAN

Oh yes, least hint of rain, I have a brolly with me, or a coat with a hood. I look pessimistic. Some days it turns out blazing sun, and me with brolly, looking like a lemon! A fine write. I'm in a tizzy with me metres in me hymn-poems! Am I?! heehee.

              • BRIAN & ANGELA

Greetings STEVEN ~ Meter is paramount in Hymn Tunes ~ Charles Wesley always got his meter right ! Some modern hymns have bad theology and don't even scan ! Better to have a GAMP when the SUN shines than not to have one when it RAINS ! Thanks BRIAN.

Well done indeed! I love how you always are bringing new forms of poetry to MPS! You know, I have never shared an umbrella with a guy? You make it look so romantic! You call it a brolly? Thats neat. I keep one in my car, but it's surely not as fancy as yours! Great poem! Hugs-Christina

Ohhhhhhhhhhh CHRIS ~ Never been kissed under a BROLLY ? You will have to talk to HUBBY ! Pleased you liked the form and function of the poem ! An English Gentleman always carries a long black rolled umbrella with a distinctive handle. As you know Brits are obsessed with the WEATHER which is why BROLLIES (nice word !) are so so important in the UK ~ Hugs under the Brolly ~ BRIAN
