Lyric-less

WriteBeLight

I know a young man,

Who listens to music.

But, won’t learn the words,

“A lyric, no use for it.”

He only cares to hear,

The melody and the beat.

I say, “You’re missing out.

The poetry’s a treat!”

The artists are so gifted,

Putting music to their words.

Some are just so creative.

Others, the worst you’ve heard.

But, I’ll always have respect,

For the writer’s message.

For whatever’s on their minds,

As they state their rite of passage.

So, I hope he’ll change his mind,

Hear the words as they unfold.

How they fit well with the music,

And, the story being told.

Good write and so very true. Words can seriously complement some music.

    • WriteBeLight

I agree so very much Goldfinch. Thanks!

Thanks HONEY ~ I love songs ~ which is poetry in musical motion ! There should a symbiosis between the Message and the Music ! "Bridge over Troubled Water" Simon & Garfunkel is a good example and EVERYTHING by Gilbert & Sullivan (Light opera),
Thanks for sharing ~ Symbiotic Hugs ~ BRIAN

I like Simon & Garfunkel too! Especially their song America. Thanks so much Brian!

When I get writers cramp I think maybe Mendelssohn had it right with his Songs Without Words - yes the words are so important which is probably why in so many second rate pop songs songs its impossible to decipher the words.

I agree about some of these songs today. Some of the lyrics are just too repetitive. Nothing like Bob Dylan or Jackson Browne, for example. Thanks Michael!

the words, the story, write the melody for me?

          • WriteBeLight

You would do extremely well with the music I am sure WW 🙂

I have written a few dumb songs in my day, lol!

A fine write. I can't write music. I go by knowledge and memory of tunes I know.

              • WriteBeLight

I wish I could play piano. Maybe that might help once I had to memorize the cords. Thanks orchidee!

                Very enhoayble little piece

it's interesting to me that you wrote about this cos i've always wondered if a song writer needs the music 1st before the words or can they take a poem and put it to music...i guess it could go either way. i'd love to be able to create the music in my mind and put words to it, but unfortunately, my mind doesn't seem to want to cooperate!
anyhow, i truly enjoyed the read! Poetically speaking it reads really well, and you make a valid point!

Thanks so very much. I have thought the same about the song vs the music. Gifted people, nonetheless 🙂

I agree and even if i can\'t write the music, i find poetry to be, if nothing else, quite cathartic at times. admittedly though i do wish i could turn at least some of my poems into songs; music can give words even more meaning than they already possess. it was a pleasure reading this piece!

You are so correct about the value of music and poetry! Thank you again for your comment 🙂

                      • valene

                        my pleasure! 🙂
