- Comment from author about the poem: DIAMONDS ~ Really are a Girl's Best Friend because ~ unlike Men ~ they never lose their luster or value ! In the UK it is traditional to give Your Partner a Diamond Ring ~ a decent one costing a least £250 ($350) Elizabeth Taylor's diamond rings cost in excess of $1 M ! It is also customary (in the UK) that if the engagement is broken the Girl keeps the ring. I know one Girl who is very beautiful (but difficult) who has five very expensive rings and she is still under 30 ~ A Serial Engager ! Diamonds are expensive because of their rarity and durability ~ it is the hardest known substance. It is CARBON arranged in an infinite 3D tetrahedral lattice. Don't throw your ring on the fire in a pique of rage ~ it will burn and increase the CO2 in the atmosphere. Most diamonds are white (transparent and colorless) but they can be blue ~ pink ~ yellow ~ mauve and grey. Some colored stones are more valuable than white ones. The value of a "rough diamond" is enhanced by careful dissection and cutting and polishing. I have visited A Diamond Factory in Haifa (Israel) very interesting ! So remember Girls always ask for a big diamond ring ~ because you're worth it ! Comments welcome ~ Diamond Love to All ~ BRIAN XOX

Ah - the ultimate engagement gift and so very well explained too Brian - - no wonder girls these days who choose manifold fiancés get to be rich !!!
THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENT FAY ~ Being a Gentleman I would never ask for my ring back if the Engagement failed ! When LIZ TAYLOR divorced RICHARD BURTON for the second time (1976) I read the she sold the TAYLOR~BURTON Diamond for $ 5 M ! Well a girl has to live ! Yours ~ BRIAN
Great write
Thanks TONY ~ pleased you enjoyed it ~ BRIAN
Welcome
Diamonds are more abundant than one realises it is the company De Beers that has control on how many are available to keep their value so high.
Good write Brian.
Yes ANDY ~ that is true. It was explained to us in HAIFA that they are "kept rare in order to conserve their value ! Thanks for your comment ~ BRIAN
Diamonds are good but rubies from my wife's country, Burma, are even better - and cheaper!! Or so I am told!!! Can't get into the hang of saying Myanmar and Yangon is still Rangoon .
Yes I love RUBIES because they have an inner fire that diamonds lack if not in direct light. RUBIES even glow in the dark if you have sufficient imagination ! BRIAN
All that for a bit of coal? Carbon?! ooh.
Thanks "O" ~ Coal is not pure carbon but GRAPHITE is (the softest mineral ~ used in pencils) also BBQ charcoal. We can make synthetic diamonds (for cutting tools) by compressing charcoal. People are often surprised that diamond and graphite are both allotropes of the element carbon. There is another allotrope (form of an element) C60 which is cyclic with hexagonal and pentagonal rings like a football. Because it is like two geodistic domes joined tiogether and it is called BUCKMINSTERFULLERENE after the inventor of the geodistic dome ! Science TRUTH is always more EXCITING than Science FICTION ! BRIAN
Love the picture of Liz, Brian. She was a gem on her own.
Yes She was really beautiful and British of course ~ we are very proud of her.. Thanks HONEY ~ Hugs BRIAN
Wonderful poem! I love diamonds but my wedding set are all I need. I'm afraid if I had earrings I'd lose one! I can't imagine possessing a diamond worth that much money!! Wow! Great write!
Thanks CHRIS ~ That\'s the problem of possessing something that valuable ~ but LIZ TAYLOR was very very special and British ! Pleased you liked it ~ Hugs BRIAN
