Acceptance.

Well the results are in,

And what we knew was true,

Dementia has come to her.

The bubble that has been growing,

Growing around her is real.

That bubble hardening,

Hardening as the weeks go by,

But I will still find ways,

Ways to penetrate it.

My love for her is stronger,

Stronger than any armour,

Any armour that may surround her.

Those at Church have been told,

And as she arose this morning

She said to me,

“I will go to Church this morning,

Stand up straight and be proud”.

At her side I will be with her,

With her as we walk into Church,

And I too will be proud,

Proud of her,

Of her acceptance of her life.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Although we have known that my wife has had an increasing problem with dementia the medics have at last confirmed it. We will go forward in our life facing this new challenge together with our love always pulling us closer together.

      A fine write. It's easy to say some cliché or phrase of comfort. it's another thing if we're experiencing the actual situation. But thinking of you. I sometimes forget a little of what some folk may be facing, whether in church always, occasionally, or never.

        Thanks Orchi, only those who have lived with it know. One of our preachers spoke about it a few months ago, I had a right go at him after the service, not that he dismissed the problem of dementia but did not know enough about it. I did get a message of apology from him.
