  • Comment from author about the poem: Green plants are the initial PRODUCERS in the Food Chain. Chlorophyll enables a plant to synthesis GLUCOSE from CO2 & H2O and produce Oxygen (O2) as a by-product ! In this way (before the Industrial Revolution) plants maintained the atmospheric CO2 at 250ppm, It has now risen to 400ppm and rising each year causing Global Warming ~ Ice Caps Melting and consequent rise in Sea-level. Most leaves contain CHLOROPHYLL (which is GREEN) which is why ~ in Spring ~ the Trees are 40 shades of Green ~ beautiful ! We should treat Plants a lovingly as we treat Animals and our Animals as lovingly as we treat our Families ~ AMEN ~ Love to All ~ BRIAN XOX

Don't forget the algae in the sea . Most of our oxygen comes from such . But with the rising sea temperatures this vital ecosystem is in peril .

    • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks SL ~ Technically the plankton contains CHLOROPHYLL but of course they are microplants ~ not leaves as such ! The rise in average Global Temperature (now 16C and rising) could have catastrophic effects in the future (2050 and beyond) ! BRIAN

      Haha! I love this. Thanks!

Thanks JANE ~ I am a Science Tutor ~ Biochemistry ~ can be fun ~ Yours BRIAN

Yes, I kind of guessed. I figured you were a teacher or student of the sciences. Have you read any of Sam Kean's books. Fun reads for even non-professionals, such as myself. His book, "The Disappearing Spoon" is one of my favorite books.

I'm off to talk to a tree now, and say nice things to it, even hug it! A fine write. Never knew there was so much to know about plants! Well, I recall some of it from what I learnt in earlier days.
A serious matter, though did you feel global warming on your field trip?!

          • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks STEVEN ~ I am fortunate that I have both studied Plant Biochemistry and been able to carry out research on Plant Biosynthesis ! Interestingly enough we were looking at Sand Dune erosion between Liverpool & Southport and (because I now live in SE England } I expecyed it to be cold and wet ! On average it was 11C (52F) and not a drop of rain all week ! Global Warming or what ! People joke about the UK "enjoying" a Mediterranean climate by 2050 ~ OK ~ but that will mean an increase in deserts ~ rising sea levels and destruction of many Polar Habitats ! I think many people are as ignorant as Trump about these matters ~ we are doing too little too late ! Children born in the UK this year will only be 83 in 2100 what sort of a Global Environment will they inherit fro us when we are partaking of Glory ! BRIAN

Some are a bit like Hezekiah? When he got 'bad news' he said, in some many words 'I'm all right, Jack'. i.e. the bad is not going to happen in my life-time. Yet we know there's many folk doing good at the present time too..
Also some say 'Why bother to save the planet, it's not going to be here for ever'? But we are care-takers, stewards of God's creation, we know.

An acrostic which teaches us much about the need for preservation of natural things - thanks Brian for sharing this wonderful make-up of leaves and plants.

Thanks FAY ~ I love your comments ~ they are always so so supportive ~ Yours B.

you are preaching to converted here but do continue preaching - there are so many who do not know the problem or chose to deny it.

                • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks MICHAEL ~ I appreciate that you are GREEN ! The problem is the SCIENCE of Global Warming and its knock on effect is quite complex and eludes many ~ BRIAN

                  Good acrostic.
The song 40 shades of green is not true, experiments have shown the the number of shades of green are infinite. Like the song though especially the Johnny Cash version.
