JOHNNY & JUNE CASH @ THE WHITE HOUSE 1977 ~ WITH JIMMY CARTER
I close my eyes and picture the emerald of the sea
From the fishing boats at Dingle to the shores of Dunardee
I miss the river Shannon and the folks at Skibereen
The moorlands and the meadows with their 40 shades of green.
But most of all I miss a Girl from Tipperary Town
And most of all I miss her lips as soft as eiderdown
Again I want to see and do ~ the things I've done and seen
Where the breeze is sweet as Shalimar and there's 40 shades of green
I wish that I could spend an hour at Dublin's surging surf
I love to watch the Farmers ~ drain the bogs and spade the turf
To see again the thatching of the straw the woman glean
I'd walk from Cork to Larne to see the 40 shades of green !

- Comment from author about the poem: Like all Country Singers Johnny Cash (1932 ~ 2003) love Ireland and the Irish with their great musical tradition. JC was a great poet and he wrote over 1000 songs all with a similar tune ! 40 Shades of Green is a great tribute to the Emerald Isle and it has been covered by many famous Irish Singers like Daniel O'Donnall. My Parents were great Cash Fans and we were in Nashville in September 2003 for Kriss Kristopherson's memorial tribute to JC at the Opry ~ very moving. JC was an iconic figure and the themes of his songs had a biblical quality. He represented an authority and moral gravitas now missing form popular music. Both he and Elvis hit the music scene in 1955 and Elvis was sexy and playful and wanted to be your Teddy Bear ! JC appeared to be stoic and doomed and uncuddly ~ He was the first Outlaw of Popular music. He sold over 90 million singles and albums ~ Unique Sound ~ Unique Person. I have all of Johnny Cash's albums.
Thanks ANDY ~ A great Man who battled with prescription drugs ~ Uppers & Downers to keep him on the road. When he married JUNE CARTER in 1966 she encouraged him to rely on the Holy Spirit for his HI's & LO's. He and June were very committed Christians and often sang at Billy Graham Crusades. We are indebted to the American Music Industry that we have hundreds of JC tracks and the Johnny & June duets (Jackson etc) on LP's and CD's ~ BRIAN
In spite of all his drug abuse even before he met June he was always a believer, his Faith never left him. His biography is a fascinating read.
I do think it amusing when people think that he went to prison, he was in jail once overnight for allegedly smuggling heroin in from Mexico, he was innocent, the other times he as in jail he was entertaining the inmates. A great man.
Thanks ANDY ~ He was raised PENTECOSTAL and his sincere Christian Faith was an essential, part of his enigmatic persona. His recordings form Fulsome Prison (Fulsome Prison Blues ~ I Walk the Line etc) are electric ! Becus of his Man in Black image JC love his nicknames ~ The Undertaker ~ The Rebel ~ The Outlaw etc ~ a true "Legend in his Time" He said his appearance at Gllastonbury in 1994 (aged 61) was one of the highlights of his career ! BRIAN
A fine write-song B! I'm not near 1,000 hymn-poems,, let alone 6,000 that Wesley wrote. Phew!
THANKS STEVEN ~ POETRY IS A GREAT GIFT and many people are unaware just how great a POET (Wordsmith) JC was and of course JW ! BRIAN
Ah - I love that last line Brian - A name and talent to remember is JC and thanks for the well-rhymed and clever reminder of the great Emerald Isle.
Thanks FAY ~ He was voted (in the USA) as the Greatest Country Singer of the 20th C because he always remained true to his Country Roots in Arkansas where he was picking cotton at the age of five during the Depression ! In the UK we are fortunate that the Emerald Isle is just on our doorstep. I hope BREXIT won't pose any problems with the North / South Irish Border ~ Yours B.
I also love Cash and Ireland especially with Irish in my immediate ancestry so this was much enjoyed - thanks Brian.
YES MICHAEL ~ It's always great when two "loves" come together ! A Singer you like singing about a Country you like ~ BRIAN
Johnny Cash was a great artist. I was a kid when he passed away, but I still felt connected to him through his music, even to this day.
Thanks DILLAN ~ pleased it struck a positive chord ! BRIAN
I'm not a Jonny cash fan but this was beautiful to read
Thanks JOOLES ~ JC is not a smooth singer like JIM REEVES ~ but he is a great poet. When I give a talk about JC I often just read his songs as POEMS and often they sound better that way many of his poems have NOT been put to music ! Melodic Hugs ~ BRIAN
