WHEN FIRST DISCOVERED

Michael Edwards

WHEN FIRST DISCOVERED

Upon the shores of paradise

and magnet drawn as Joshua led

the land of light where sentences

of rising hills that punctuate

the open skies and milk white light.

Where jet black shadows casting form

on landscapes golden honeyed tones

sweep down to dappled shimmering seas

and pointillist colours bounce and play

recorded by artistic  palette.

This the painters promised land

each day and as blue mists descend

across this terra incognita.

  • Comment from author about the poem: The Riviera before it was 'discovered' and developed as it is today was a draw for many leading artists who fell in love with its light and landscape which, it is argued, was the main influencing factor in the development of impressionism.

What a land of light this place must be. You draw its paradise with words and with paint so very well Michael.

The painting reminds me of a sunset on the gold Coast of Flords , beautiful . Sadly it is not the same as it was 55 years ago either . Stirs many memories I had long ago put away . But that is the purpose of the poem .

Beautiful poem, Michael! It is, indeed, a magical area, and I can see why it inspired artists.

"Sentences of rising hills" great visual metaphor. I had to look up pointillism, again the perfect word for this tribute to Impressionism.

Yes pointillism is a great form and the impressionists were masters.
