  • Comment from author about the poem: Because of their large ~ front facing eyes and mottled feathers Owls are very attractive birds. Because their appearance of sagacity we refer to a smart person as a "Wise Old Owl". They feature in Myth (Greek) ~ Symbolism (Leeds) ~ Literature (Harry Potter) and in Children's Pictorial Literature they are always depicted as wise and knowledgeable ! There are 185 species of True Owls (Strigidae) and 15 species of Barn Owls (Tytonidae). They are all predators and because the are silent in flight ~ and almost invisible ~ they are able to surprise their prey which consists of mice and other small mammals. The regurgitate bones and fur etc as "owl pellets" which gives researchers clues to their diet ! Most UK Zoos contain species of Owls such as Snowy Owls ~ which are outstandingly beautiful ! Personally I believe BIRDS were created t fly free and should not be caged ~ what do you think ? Comments welcome ~ Love BRIAN XOX

I have watched Barn Owls in the wild a great deal, as I have other owls. The unfortunate thing about Barn Owls is that there are more of them in captivity than there are in the wild.

    • BRIAN & ANGELA

I agree ANDY ~ Barn Owls were created and designed to FLY FREE it should be illegal to cage them. We rescued an injured one a few years ago ~ BUT as soon as it was able to fly free we released it even though we had grown very attached to it. Thanks for your comment ~ BRIAN

        Great poem Brian
        Owls and the kestrel
        Are my favourite birds

        • BRIAN & ANGELA

Yes indeed PHR ~ very different but both excellent and elegant Birds of Prey and on top of their FOOD CHAIN. We are fortunate in the UK that we have so many species of Bird and great Nature reserves where we can observe them in the WILD and not in CAGES ! Thanks BRIAN

In s. Louisiana we have screech owls that make an eerie sound. Their bones are hollow and they have little meat making them extremely light loved the poem.

          • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks "A" ~ yes they are light ~ kool and silent which makes them such a lethal predator. Screech Owls sound like ~ what we call Banshees (Irish Witches) ~ spooky. Many poeple associate OWLS with Witchcraft and the occult etc. Pleased you liked the Poem ~ I use ACROSTICS and SONNETS because it sets a reasonable limit to the poem and they don't have to Rhyme ~ Blank verse (fixed meter) or Free verse. Yours BRIAN

Such lovely creatures - I can forgive them their diet.

              • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks MICHAEL ~ Nature red in tooth & claw ~ well applies to OWLS. But remember to maintain ecological equilibrium there has to be prey & predators intricately linked in complex food chains and food webs ~ OK Humans in the 21st C in the UK are 94% Carnivores ~but we leave it to others to do our hunting & butchering ! I'm having a VEGGIE INDIAN MEAL tonight ~ with Veggie Friends ~ BRIAN No Sacred Cow was sacrificed to provide this meal ! B.

I once had an amazing experience with a Great White Owl in the mountains of NC. It is too long to relate here, but it spawned a poem that I will share at some point. Love your poem, Brian!

Wonderful poem about owls. They are beautiful to look at. Your authors notes were very informative, as always. On your note whether a bird should be caged, that is a firm NO, they deserve to fly and be free! Owl hugs, Christina

Thanks CHRIS for another encouraging comment ~ I am glad you appreciated my abhorance of caging birds ~ especially cool free fliers like OWLS ~ Fluffy Owl Hugs for you too ~ BRIAN
