Nan.

Goldfinch60

The tears fall down my face

As the memory comes to my mind

When I pick up the ‘phone,

She is no longer there,

No longer with us,

But as the tears flow

I look around and see her,

See her in the flowers,

The flowers that were hers.

The white lily standing tall

Showing me her love,

The amaryllis flowering in June

Reminding me of her,

And showing me she is there.

She will always be with me,

In my mind and in my soul,

As I remember her

And the wonderful times we had,

Those times we had together.

I look at the flowers

And remember my Nan,

Remember her with love.

  • Comment from author about the poem: My neighbour said hello to me in the garden a couple of days ago and she was crying, she said that she had just picked up the telephone to ring her Nan before realising that she had passed away a few weeks ago. She had some of her Nan's plants in her garden and was looking at them. The strangest one was the flowering Amaryllis, an indoor plant which we both thought only flowered in wintertime. I wrote this for her.

Your loving words and phrases would reach to anyone's heart having lost well-loved Nans - such an appealing read - thanks for sharing your loss and love with us here Andy.

    • Goldfinch60

Hi Fay, this was not my loss but my neighbours, I wrote it for her. My grandmothers both died in the 1950's and I cannot really remember them.

Thanks for you comment and caring.

What a cracking write - like the others it made me think of my Gran too - and then my mum - now feeling quite sad but so privileged to have had them in my life.

Really nice job. I think it's a bit harder to write what we ourselves aren't feeling but I think you put down your neighbors thoughts quite nicely

Thank you elena. I know what you mean but I put my feelings into my poems as well. (See my poem The Bubble)
