* Plenipotentiaries - full powers.

Fits tune: Darwalls 148th ('Ye holy angels bright')

Psalm 148

********

1. Praise you the LORD, we praise

And high our anthems raise

Praise Him in heavenly heights

Glorious to our sights

Praise Him angels

Life-giving wells

In Zion dwells

God, each tongue tells

2. Praise you Him, all His hosts

And unto farthest coasts

Praise you Him, sun and moon

Through night, day, eve, and noon

You stars of light

Praise Him for He

Light of world be

Judge of all right

3. Praise Him, you heavens of heavens

Praise Him in 'perfect sevens' (i.e. perfectly)

And too you waters, rains

For He holy remains

Let them His name

Praise, for He spake

And did them make

Great is His fame

4. He stablished them for e'er

Thence they do remove ne'er

Decrees He made, them set

They shall not pass, for yet

He does ordain

Their bounds, limits

Gives their remits

True, clear and plain

5. Praise the LORD from the earth

Each creature give Him worth

Dragons, all deeps, fire, hail

Praise Him sure without fail

Snow, vapour, storms

Fulfil His word

You have Him heard

He none you scorns

6. Mountains, hills, fruitful trees

All cedars, beasts, all these

Praise Him, and too cattle

Creeping things, one and all

And flying fowl

Kings of the earth

Serve Him with mirth

His glories tell

7. Princes and you judges

Young, old, boys, girls, riches

Of His grace do tell forth

From east, west, south, and north

Let them all praise

The LORD's name high

All to Him cry

And trust His ways

8. His name is excellent

Blessings us he has sent

Above earth, heaven, His glory be

His works we see

His praise our strength

Is, this we know

We saints below

Life, endless length

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 6666 4444 metre. John Darwall originally wrote the tune to this, a setting of Psalm 148. I don't know what 'dragons' are exactly (verse 5) but they praise the Lord too, whatever they are! You seen them dragons?!

  • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks STEVE for a great EIGHT STANZA poem set to an awesome tune ~ one of my favorites. Remember in HYMNS we cross into the Spiritual Dimension ~ so not only Angels and Archangels abound but also mythical creatures from the nether regions DRAGONS ~ DEMONS & HOBGOBLINS ! BRIAN

Thanks Brian - maybe those are the 'dragons' - and not always good spiritual powers. You seen any hobgoblins - or rather not see them?!

Another fine example of your truly great craftsmanship O

Thanks M. A bit tricky with the 4-syllable lines. We begin to say something, then the line is finished - only 4 syllables allowed!

Hee hee Brian. Well, it seems dragons could be sea monsters, big creatures in the sea, etc. Surprisingly The Message Version, usually too paraphrased for me, has 'sea dragons'. I usually use KJV for my hymn-poems.

          Good one Orchi.
