My first born
A baby girl just arrived in this world
Her cry is different
So is her appearance
My world stopped in that split second
A Down syndrome child
How could this be
It was never noticed throughout the pregnancy
Grief has taken over
The ‘perfect’ child lost
New challenges ahead
How am I to cope
But I see things differently
In a new light
Nineteen years have gone by
She has her own life
All grown up with a job on the side
But still full of innocence with a childlike mind
So full of love
There’s no room for hate
But her mind works differently
Sometimes she can struggle to make sense
There are still challenges at times
But I’ve learnt so much
Patience I’ve gained and unconditional love
Nineteen years later
I would never change her
She’s my perfect child
I’ll never leave her

Wonderful expression of mothers love for a special being. I have a special daughter in her late 30's and i'm well aware of the hoops and hurdles of emotion that brings. Big respect to you for finding beautiful words you could share. I havent found them yet.
Thank you
Just read your notes about this and realised i got things a bit wrong. However the sentiment is genuine so let it be. ooppss.
Don't worry about it haha π
Very beautiful....great write
Thank you π
The previous comments already said it, your poem is beautiful. But it is also courageous to take on a subject many people would shy away from. Beside the beautiful language you infused this poem with so much understanding and love. You described the girl in such a perfect way, ending with a fact: EVERY child is beautiful, EVERY child is perfect.
Thank you! Yes I was quite worried to publish it as not many write about this subject. And that is true
These are such lovely sensitive people and you have written the tale with such understanding and compassion - great write Shannon.
Thank you π
I haven't had the privilege of becoming a parent but I hope to feel what you feel one day, really lovely work
I'm not actually a parent, I wrote this poem from someone else's perspective. But thanks for the comment
Wow, so beautiful. Keep writing things that you don't see written about as often, you did such a great job!
