Road-Shock.

Fay Slimm.

Road-Shock.

She lies a pitiful sight,
firey tail
awash with new light,
tyre-impaled
flesh pooling in blood,

mouth full of dust.

Russet coat
grit-matted, hunched
limbs an epitaph
to desperate attempt
at flight
from the dragon bent

on annihilation.

Eyes arrowed readily
honed toward
safety's suckling-den,
leg-straggled

   intention of thwarting

every danger.

Road-shock
stares from this dead
female fox,
cubs left defenceless
hungry die
while some uncaring
motorist flies
along country lanes,

unfeelingly bred.

Fay, your poem opens our eyes to the sad fact of road-kill. Be it a fox, cat, dog, or bird, they all die needlessly.
    Well written as always.

it's so sad to see animals die for nothing x

THANKS FAY ~ Picture and Poem both send a SAD MESSAGE ! Just as we cause great damage (with our cars) to our species ~ there is much more damage (mainly unacknowledged) to other living creatures All living things occupy the planet and we are all interdependent and should seek to conserve not kill! The CAR alas hold a position high in the FOOD chain ~ bizarre because it FEEDS on Fossil Fuel and kills but never consumes its kill ! I love you for your empathy ~ in all things ~ Yours BRIAN

Road kill isn't a pleasant sight. One day the tables will turn, and we'll all be the road kill.

Such a sad sight to see any animal run over but foxes are such beautiful animals it seems to make it more so. Good write Fay.

A fine tribute to one of natures beautiful creations. Thanks for sharing, Fay.

    Sad.

See this quite a bit round my way. Some time ago I swerved to avoid one and ended up in a ditch - a farmer came to my rescue and pulled me out with his tractor but only after berating me for aiming my car at the poor creature.

    Very good poem Fay..
    It's the one thing I
Hate to see on a road.

Sad indeed and oh' so very true.. and frequent. ...

I folk would only cut their speed, just a little, I feel sure we would see far fewer such casualties.... one of your necessary poems this I think Fay and tho hard to make such a topic pretty, you have done a sterling job of drawing attention to it..... Neville

Thank you dear Nev. - I remember wanting to reach readers' hearts with this piece of empathy with lives of animals lost on the road.

always a pleasure but a shame in this case too....
