You may have been disappointed in me,
I rejected the example you set.
My heart compelled me to make a change.
Forgive me for not following in your footsteps,
I had to stumble along my own dark path.
The light you provided was never enough.

Thanks LOUIS ~ Many people cross our paths ~ some set examples and some show us the way. But in my experience ~ We (Men especially) tend to plough our own furrow and often end up in the DITCH ~ sometimes with the Tractor on top of us ! Yours BRIAN
Ouch! I can relate. Thanks for your comment!
I see it as someone berating someone else for not giving the support he wanted. My father wanted me to get an apprenticeship and was so disappointed when I chose a different path - he couldn't see why I wanted to work in an office and could see no future in it - however I must add that he was so proud when I finally proved myself.
Thanks for being able to relate this poem to your own experience. That more or less was the point of it.
Great poem Louis,
The "you" could refer to Dad, older Brother, Jesus, or even an uncle (for a guy), or Mother, older Sister, Jesus, or even an aunt (for a girl).
But the "you" could also represent our own inner self, the person inside us we want to be, but cannot live up to.
Oh, what an interesting slant, Fred! I hadn't thought of "you" as my inner self, but that may well be a truth I've concealed from myself. I'll have to dwell on this. Thanks!
You are welcome, always happy to give your grey matter a little push!!! 🙂
Eh, you can't really expect someone to follow your example. Life is all about finding your own way, making your own mistakes. It could be a friend, a parent, a loved one. Anything. Who knows? I don't. But what I do know is that "light" shines brightest in a dark place. Maybe you just weren't far out in the dark enough to see it.
A point well taken, Nicholas, and well stated. I appreciate your thoughtful reply!
I wonder if you need to apologize. You are alive, out of jail (assumption)
not on drugs (assumption) and can think and write. Nicely done.
Your assumptions are fair ... I'm not currently dead, haven't been in jail for some time now, my only drugs are coffee, beer, and wine, with an occasional margarita or whisky sour ... (come to think about it, does that mean I'm not on drugs?) Perhaps I should apologize, but I'm not sure who to? Oh well, thanks for helping me put things in perspective, I think!
Oh gosh I hope I was not offensive. I was trying to be humorous. I should have perhaps focused more,on the apology to your dad for not following his lead. Your poem was nicely done.
Of course you were not offensive, I enjoyed the humor in your comments and tried to respond in kind. I always look forward to your input and humor, my friend. Thanks for your interpretation of my poem!
i think one would have to know your dad to make3 aqccxurate comment, two sides to every situtation
You must always chose your own path to follow the light in your life.
Absolutely true! Thank you for your response.
Wonderful. We all as humans, i believe are here to figure out who we are and when we do, embrace that with all of our might. Proudly. Whether we differ from the *norm* , our parents , our god, family or society. Noone will walk in your footsteps or see the world through your eyes. That is your gift.
A quote in which i have tattooed on me goes ' believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense'
I have that same quote framed in my office. It is a quote of the great prophet, Buddha. I knew we had a lot in common ... He is one of my role models. Thank you for this wise response, my friend,
Apologies for the book ^^^^🙈🙈
Apology unnecessary. I appreciate you sharing your heart with me.
