NUMBER POEMS are always fun !  Just to remind you

TANKAS are extended  Haiku & Senryu to 5 7 5 7 7  !

Personally because they are longer and stronger ~ I

feel they need a soupcon of rhyme for flow ~ ENJOY

    Good fun number tankas Brian

    • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks ANDY ~ another day ~ another structure ~ another subject ~ poetry is infinite ! BRIAN

    • Michael Edwards

They read well Brian - I find that they can be quite demanding since you have to stick strictly to a structure even though they would work equally well if your ignore it - anyway all works well here.

      • BRIAN & ANGELA

Well Michael ~ I was taught as a Classical Poet ~ The 5 7 5 7 7 English Tankas have a form which give structure and flow and gravitas ! In my mind they are long enough to deserve a soupcon of rhyme ! If they are not 5 7 5 7 7 then they become QUINTETS either Blank or Free Verse ~ which as you say (depending on the verbal contents) can be just as effective poetrywise ! BUT ~ if I state it is an ENGLISH TANKA they it must by definition (and form book !) be 5 7 5 7 7 ~ OK ~ BRIAN

Oohh, we're overwhelmed - five in one day! heehee. I sort of take an 'easier' option sometimes of 8.6.8.6. That's Common Metre for hymns - fits many tunes. Of course, I gotta come up with the words as well!

        • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks STEVE ~ I like to give value for comment ! Because I am a Performance Poet I think metre and rhythm is more important than rhyme ! All Hymns are Poetry and sometimes ~ if there are only a few in the Prayer Meeting ~ and no pianist ~ we read the hymn as a round (each one read one verse ~ we do the same with the Bible Reading !) or in unison. Some have said they got more out of the hymn by reading it (slowly and with emphasis) but of course the ENGLISH TANKA has to be 5 7 5 7 7 ! See my note to Michael ! Yours BRIAN

Thanks Brian. You're welcome to use my hymn-poems - read and/or sing them! Some are a bit long. Erm, for any Copyright you can ask me, but best ask the Author - higher than me! Got the phone number?! I only wish SOME WHERE would use them, having a 'set-back' of 'They are not really where we are "at". Not to be bitter, but from hence, I may not be "at" that church! Me own fault - trying to put old into the new (modern) - can't be done! Hopefully I use well-known tunes, though some can be a bit obscure.

          • orchidee

Oohh I don't care that much if they are iambic (if I knew what it meant!) or penta-wotsit (pentameter). I can't tell much difference in poems after me sherries! heehee.

                Welcome

              • Fay Slimm.

A style and form which demands so much writing experience Brian - - such a light and engaging rhyme .

                • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks FAY ~ I always feel a TANKA gives you almost twice as many syllables (31) as the Haiku or Senryu (17). Much better for a Poem like this and tomorrows sequel ! Thanks for your encouragement ~ Yours BRIAN.

A fun way to read. Difficult to write. Thanks for sharing.

                  • BRIAN & ANGELA

THANKS MALU ~ I like the structures of classical because it provides a framework ! For an English TANKA 5 7 5 7 7 syllables ! Next you need a SUBJECT ~ for instance A FOX then all you need to do is find the WORDS (syllables) ~ for instance ~ FOX with thick brown coat etc. etc. Pleased you liked it ~ Hugs BRIAN

                  • Christina8

Thanks CHRISTINA ~ pleased you enjoyed the (57577) English Tanka form ~ 31 syllables give scope for a good ditty ! Pleased you liked FIVE ~ I know any ode "To Dump the Trump" would bang your GONG ! My poem is now complete with a KS comment ~ Huggy Hugs ~ BRIAN
