Sitting at Heavens Door.

Goldfinch60

There I was in my heaven,

Just sitting in my chair,

The wonder of jazz

Playing from the radio,

Reading a book

By my favourite author,

A glass of red wine by my side.

What else could I ask for?

I WAS in heaven.

  • Comment from author about the poem: There is a Jazz programme on the radio on early Saturday Evenings in the UK which I have been listening to for years, I normally listen to it while I am preparing the meal for my wife and I. This week I had to prepare the meal early as it needed time in the oven. The food went in the oven, I poured myself a glass of wine, put on the radio picked up my book and just relaxed. (My wife, who is not very well, went up to have a lie down so I was not ignoring her)

As a sax player you can guess I'm a fan of jazz too. This 50's era is actually my favorite period and i have several jerry and chet recordings. More into Sonny Rollins of that era tho. I can harmonise with your blissful description of this relaxing time. A very evocative write. Thank you.

Thank you b-e, that 50's era is my favourite as well, I like all types of jazz but the 50's cool jazz is wonderful.
I think that I have nearly all Chet Baker's recordings. I certainly have all the Miles Davis ones.

The very last chet recordings of his concerts/gigs i found to be the most soulful both with his unique singing voice and fluffy trumpet. Truly worth listening to. Miles was best in 50's i agree, both with his own and others groups. In particular 'so what' but what on earth is coltrane doing on that track (not a fan).

Your poem sounds like an ideal piece of heaven - must get more into jazz - see what you're doing G!! 🙂

        • Goldfinch60

          Jazz is wonderful, thanks Michael.

MORNIN' ANDY ~ "If music be the Food of Love ~ play on !" The SAX has a heavenly sound ~ shunned by stiff starchy classical orchestras ~ but the are so many great SAXOPHONISTS in Heaven now ~ that they must out number the Harpists. Sax and Harp Jazz duo in a Pub in Lanelli (S Wales) now there's heaven ! Love the CD love the Poem ~ "Lazin' on a Sunday Afternoon in Birdland AMEN !" Thanks for caring ~ BRIAN

          Thanks Brian, absolute bliss.

I, too, was a big fan of jazz in the fifties, and loved Gerry Mulligan. I was right there at the table digging it with you, Goldie!

          • Goldfinch60

Thank you Louis. Cool, man, cool.

So, instead of listening to love songs, which I do when I write, jazx is where is at... Enjoyed it...

            • Goldfinch60

Certainly in my life. Thanks rr.

              • rrodriguez

                You bet...

A fine write G. Glimpses, moments (lasting several moments) of heaven! Erm, 'Elvis' is at our church - has all his records. He don't look like him though, but he is known in town as 'Elvis'.

                • Goldfinch60

Thanks Orchi. Elvis lives in us all.

                  • orchidee

I got a bit concerned, because in a more strict church that the one where 'Elvis' is, they may call it 'idolatry' and ban Elvis, The Beatles, whoever...

You said it so well, Goldfinch. What else could be there to make us happy? Maybe female companionship!

                    • Goldfinch60

Thanks Fred, my female companionship was having a lay down.

It is the kind of heaven for me. Shall create my own. Like your poem.

I always say that one can live in heaven or hell. You just have to tune to one or other station. Nice writing. Awesome
