“Do you take sugar?”
The four words she said
That felt like a dagger to my heart.
My loved one has gone,
Gone into her own world,
Her own world of dementia,
Where I am becoming forgotten.
Four simple words
That showed how lost she was,
“Do you take sugar?”

- Comment from author about the poem: My wife of nearly 36 years has never known me having sugar in tea and last night she asked me the question "Do you take sugar?". It showed me just how bad her dementia had become.

Oh this made my heart drop a beat - so so sad - be assured my thoughts are with you and your wife Andy.
Thank Michael.
Thinking of you both. Yes, those words from a programme - radio I think: 'Does he take sugar?' (did you know it?). It was about people who are overlooked by some, due to some disability. People would ignore the 'special needs' person and talk to their carer, partner, etc instead, as though the other person did not exist.
Yes I now the show but this is different it is my wife asking me if I want sugar.. Thanks for you kind thoughts.
Goldfinch, my heart is bleeding. My mom was in and out of dementia before she passed away, with short times of clarity and long times of ....
Thank you so much for your poem, I pray for you and your wife!
Thank you Fred, your prayers will be much appreciated.
Thanks ANDY ~ Beautiful Music but very sad lament. I've never had a Wife ~ but in prospect ~ her gradual deterioration would be the saddest thing ! Praying for strength for you ~ BRIAN Please check my wordless Poem ~ Thanks B.
Thank you Brian.
You're a man who sees beauty with his eyes and shows it to us with his words Goldfinch. My heart goes out to you as you treasure the times when she is with you.
Thank you so much b-e, the beauty is always there and will always be there.
A stunningly sad disease and its wrath captured so well in your poem, Goldie! My heart is with you.
Thank you Louis.

Got me a little sad hearing this. My thoughts are with you and your wife, i wish all the best for you.
Thank you Brycycle, much appreciated.
The everyday question asked by your wife intensified the sadness of your situation. Dementia is a very cruel disease - more for the spouse having to watch the decline of a loved one. Your poem left me feeling quite sad.
Thank you for your comment Sue. That simple question really hit me.
This hits home ....
It sure does, thank you for reading my words and your comment.
This just wrecked me for you, sir. I was extremely close to my maternal grandmother, and it made me think of some of the things she started to say as she got worse. We lost her to pneumonia before she got very bad. I remember the first time she forgot how to turn on the shower. Oh, I'm just holding the both of you so close in my thoughts and prayers.
Thank you Heather, your prayers are most welcome.
