Stumbling Service.

Goldfinch60

It was a strange service.

The Choir traipsed in,

And sang the Introit.

Yes I was there,

Groaning out the bass line.

The Preacher welcomed all

And announced the first hymn,

He said to all,

“You may not know this hymn

The choir did not!”

The Choir had gone through it

Before the service started,

And had an idea.

The hymn started,

The choir sang,

The congregation slowly joined,

And when it was over

We very nearly knew it.

The first reader stood up,

Came to the lectern,

And started to read the lesson.

At almost every other word,

She hesitated,

Trying to form their sounds.

She got through it and sat down.

The second reader got up,

And seemed to keep stumbling

Over easy words.

The hymns were sung

And then came the Sermon,

But the Preacher kept getting lost,

Kept hesitating.

The Service was over

And the last hymn was sung,

One we all knew.

So we left the Church uplifted,

After such a stumbling service.

  • Comment from author about the poem: The Church Service was one of those that seemed to be laden with faults. The picture is one I took of the Church of which I am a member.

Doh! good write G/F. It's a killer if a verse of a hymn is omitted, and not everyone remembers. 'Omit the starred verses' as in some hymn-books. Then we're all singing from the same sheet, but singing different verses between us!
Also, some 'round's that go wrong, can 'murder' a song. I hate them.

Cooeee - is there a pic with this?!

I enjoyed this and could visualise the event - which river is it ? looks a great location.

    • Goldfinch60

It is the River Avon at Evesham. I have many pictures of it and have written very many poems about it or as I refer to it, My River.

Lovely part of the country Andy - our local river the Welland (which passes through my village) is much smaller river and is a protected haven for wild life. A joy to walk along but many stretches are inaccessible.

Evesham, just down the stumbling road from me, give or take a wrong turn or two. Amusing tale nicely put together. \Enjoyed it.

Thank you da, that stumbling road can be very uncertain sometimes.

Great poem Goldfinch. No matter how stumbling the service is, as long as it gets the message across, everybody is fine. And you DID get the message across.

            Thank you Fred, much appreciated.

Was it shock, horror, outrage, when the pews were removed?! We've a town church from about the 12th Century. Looks like 1066 (!) on the outside, but modern inside.

Some days things just don't go right. Stumbled but lifted is still good.

Thanks m, sometimes life does stumble but we manage to keep going.

Love the humor and what a beautiful church looks very old

              • Goldfinch60

Humour is one of the keys to our lives.

As Churches go in the UK it is not that old, it was commissioned in 1903.

May be they just want to try a new way to do the service. It seems works better than the regular ones.

After all, It is a stumbling and entertaining service.
