HEY MATE ~ LET'S GRADUATE !

BRIAN & ANGELA

Never underestimate

The feeling when you GRADUATE

Like Archimedes ~ strut round Town

Resplendent in your Cap & Gown !

BA BMus or BSc

Or honed and polished PhD

The gongs look all the same to me

Not your CV ~ it's YOU I see

Job seeking GUY in front of Me !

Oxford ~ Cambridge ~ Harvard ~ Yale

Ivy League and Honey Trail

It's WHAT You know and WHO you know

Gets You the Job that mints the DOUGH !

So I say YES !  When Dudes ask Me

Should I go to VARSITY ?

Gives you three years to mature

To learn the ropes ~ grow up and Score !

With those three years ~ dusted and done

Then ~ You'll be a MAN my SON

Oportunes Door will open wide

Be Bold ~ Be Brave and stroll inside !

Be KOOL and let your flag unfurl

Don't panic if they choose a GIRL

They are much smarter ~ than us MEN

Can MULTITASK and MOTHER HEN !

We all suceed to some Degree

A NICHE for You ~ a NICHE for Me

The WORLD OF WORK is nay too bad

Especially working for your DAD

The OLD BOYS NETWORKS ~ go to show

It's WHO not WHAT ~ you need to KNOW

Thanks for visiting ~ comments welcome ~ Love BRIAN XOX

THANKS MICHAEL ~ For me (as far as Males are concerned) they come into te JOB MARKET @ 21 with a bit of maturity (not still wet behind the ears @ 18 ! On the other hand most Young Teen Females I know were more than ready (for work) @ 14 ! Takes Males another 7 years to mature ! BRIAN

    • Sunflowers Bloom

      Enjoyed this !

      • BRIAN & ANGELA

HI SUNFLOWER ~ I know you know the difference Qualifications can make in the Job Market ! I trust you encourage all Your Students ~ to at least think about going to UNI ~ Yours BRIAN

Nice one Brian. New subject. Excellent display of opportunity.
        Thanks for sharing and teaching.

        • BRIAN & ANGELA

OBRIGADO MALU ~ Yes every Subject has a Poem in it if you dig deep enough ! I enjoyed the memories # when writing this ! However School is wasted on the YOUNG and University on the NAIVE ! September Hugs from Brother BRIAN !

          Good write Brian.

          • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks STEVE ~ The point I'm trying to make is ~ The University experience (growing up in Ivory Towers !) is just as important as which UNI and which SUBJECT ~ Of course there are meal tickets like Medicine ~ Law ~ Accountancy etc but many graduates have to compete hard in the Job Market ! BRIAN

          • Frank Prem

Very niche indeed, Brian. Good job.

            • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks Frank ~ There is a NICHE for everyone and even those with a DEGREE in The Performing Arts can earn a crust as Street Buskers ~ anywhere in the World ! A Degree always broadens your horizons ! BRIAN

            • Louis Gibbs

A well done example of branching out with success! Kudos, Brian.

Well as an Educationalist ~ I consider the Three Years (18 ~ 21) as a RITE of PASSAGE ! The Subject and the Uni are irrelevant ~ It's BEING THERE (and having Been There) that is lasting and really counts ! Knowledge is ephemeral and ~ CONFUCIUS He Say ~ GOOGLE has rendered rote learning obsolete ! Thanks LOUIS ~ Yours BRIAN

Education is a good start but in my day the thing that mattered was experience which cannot be taught.

                • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks ANDY things are different in the 21st C ANDY ~ You only start to accumulate useful experience after you GRADUATE ! Of course there are still Vocational Degrees like NURSING ~ MEDICINE ~VETERINARY ~ LAW ~ AUTO ENGINEERING ~ LANDSCAPE DESIGN etc. However in your day ANDY you all left School at 14 and spent three years \"Sitting next to Nelly (or Jimmy) learning to do their Job as an Apprentice. Oddly enough the Government has just resurrected APPRENTICESHIPS for 18 year olds ! Yours BRIAN

                    • Tony36

                      Welcome

                    • FredPeyer

Love your poem, Brian, and totally agree!
But do wonder sometimes about all the PhD cab drivers in New York!

                      • BRIAN & ANGELA

That is TRUE FRED ~ However (in my experience) researching for a PhD takes you to the EDGE of knowledge in PHYSICS etc or whatever your assigned Area of Study is. Normally in the UK it takes three years and during that time the MIND is greatly expended ! Some carry on "pushing back the frontiers" in their chosen field ~ othrs become TAXI DRIVERS etc ~ but with expanded minds ~ OK ~ Yours BRIAN

                      • myself and me

Graduate from school, never going to graduate from life class.

                        Good writing.

                      • sue.evans

I agree uni does give you chance to mature but how right you are about networking and who you know what you know making the biggest difference. Unfortunately, here in the UK students leave uni with a massive debt before they even start work - don't know how it is in the US?
Enjoyed reading this - cleverly put!

                      • Christina8

A wonderful poem! You have done it again! It's always interesting to see where your muse takes you. But this rhyming write was a pleasure to read! Great job, Brian! Hugs--Chrstina
