When I was just a youngster,
I wished that I was old,
So I could do what I wanted,
And not what I was told.
Then as I got older
And school got in the way,
I wished it was the weekend,
And wished the days away.
Then as I aged a bit,
And work would fill my day,
I again wished for the weekend
And wished those days away.
Well now I am finally older,
And I don't see things the same.
No wishing days away for me,
I Just enjoy what still remain.
I see with new perspective,
All those days that have past,
And I wish I had them back again,
They went away far too fast.

I rarely look back but how I would like back all those days - there is so much I still want to do despite my ancient frame - love the poem.
I've often thought as a child how I wished I were an adult, and now being an adult I wish youth back.
"And I wish I had them back again,
They went away far too fast."
Me too. Feel the same way.
Nice writing.
Time has a way of teaching us if we can to learn. Thank you.
Great poem lasergraph. I remember when I was in my teen years, I couldn't imagine being 40 or older. It seemed so very far away. I wasted my time on the present, unaware of how fast the time would pass. Now I'm fast approaching 61 and I'm always looking in that rear view mirror it seems. The things I did or didn't do and why. But...the past is a great teacher of life. ; )
I am 66. The days fly by like a rocket and I just think of all the time I wasted through my life. Wisdom doesn't come because you know everything, it comes because you have made all the mistakes.
Which must make us both wise men. ; )
The trick is to not get so old you forget what the mistakes were.
Love your great, well written poem very much lasergraph. At 69 I know from personal experience what you are so eloquently talking about. While I do remember the good things from the past, I am looking forward to the next 30 years!
I am just behind you at 66 but I find I am doing much more reflecting as the days behind me pile up.
To be honest, I do think more about the past now than I did through my 40's and 50's. Now that the kids are grown, gone, married....more time to myself.
I can identify with that. More time to reflect. Our birth certificate doesn't come with an expiration date so we don't know how many tomorrows we get.
Good write and very true but I had a good life and will go on enjoying my ageing years.
