THE DECISION
In practice for the wedding day
with mournful echoes in her mind
the melody of morrow played.
In turmoil now at last alone
she stood in anguish there before
the mirror by her single bed.
And to the question posed of her
with vexed design now resolute
she knew the answer would be no.

- Comment from author about the poem: Three stanzas, three lines in each stanza, eight syllables to the line. Been away staying with relations who have a magnificent apartment at Whitborne Hall which is shown in the photo. It’s regularly used as a wedding venue and has a magnificent hall with sweeping staircases which seemed to me a bit eerie when no one is about. This poem came to me while I was walking up the stairs.

Great poem Michael. Did not expect the ending, had to look twice to make sure I got it right.
Beautiful building, I am sure it will end up eventually as a watercolor!
Thanks Fred - yes I'm sure a watercolour will be on its way soon. We attended a banquet there on Sunday - great experience.
If the food was as good as the building is gorgeous, you must have had a "Kings Table"! 🙂
Apart from the dress code it was like being transported back to the 19th century.
Super write Michael, like Fred I had to read it twice to confirm the ending.
Somehow that empty hall where so many marriages had taken place seemed so haunting it just said to me: 'Perhaps the bride said 'No'' - and a poem was born!!
A fine write and pic M. Boo hoo! I was hoping KP would say no, but she said yes. I'm plunged into utter despair. I've married here now! lol.
KP's nuts - cheers Orchi
Fine write again my friend - - An outstanding place of beauty may frighten a young bride into saying No methinks -- -the poem resounds with the feel of empty luxuriance Michael - love the grand picture and look forward to the following watercolour in due time. -
Thank you Fay - the watercolour may be a little while as I am busy on a couple of projects at the moment - but it'll come.
Thanks MICHAEL for a "Story of Everyday Life" Some are blessed to live in Mansions ~ some live RUFF ~ Some are jilted at the altar ~ that's TUFF ~ Some are mown down on a Cycle Track in New York ~ when will we ever learn ~ when will we ever learn ? Thanks for sharing poem & pic ~ Yours BRIAN Please check my poem ~ Thanks BRIAN
Cheers Brian - life doesn't treat all fairly - I'm just so grateful.
What a gorgeous building! I loved your poem with a surprise ending. Loved it!
Thanks Christina - it was a joy to stay there and will post some more photos with future poems written whilst there.
Wow, the poor groom is in for a bad day! Well done formal poem, Michael. Quite creative!
And there is a lake where the groom can drown his sorrows - if not himself!! Thanks Louis
A perfect place for a perfect wedding with a surprise end.
And it has a knot garden which far surpasses most of those in stately homes of Ye Olde England.
I too had to read it twice , very good Michael a watercolor to follow I assume!
Thanks Bill - no one seems to have picked up that maybe she anticipates HIS answer to be 'No'
Some decisions are most unexpected. Enjoyed the write.
Thank you.
i enjoyed this write
Thanks so much Ron
