“I blame God for this you know!”
She said,
This coming from my wife,
A lady who has sung Gods Praises,
Sung them throughout her life.
Followed the Christian Faith
In a devout but humble way.
Helped in the Church
Helped to spread God’s word.
And here she is now,
Her fine singing voice taken from her,
Her body no longer able to walk unaided,
Her mind being lost to the world of dementia.
This morning as she struggled back from the toilet,
She looked at me,
Her mind seemed to clear
And she hit me with the words
That I would never thought she would say,
“I blame God for this you know!”

- Comment from author about the poem: I would never have though that I would have heard these words come from my wife. The music is the last movement of Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony (The Pathetique) and I believe that that first chord is the saddest note in music, it fits this poem for me.

WOW ANDY ~ A very challenging Message so early in the Morning ~ especially when backed by the "Pathetique" Recntly I have visited and prayed with "Choice Saints" Fumbling ~ Drizzling & Drooling" while I held their hand ~ former intellectuals reduced to dribbling infants. They did not exactly "blame" God but both Harold and John asked me to pray that the Lord would "Take them home to Heaven" In the case of Harold my prayers have been answered ! My Prayers are with you ANDY and your lovely wife ~ AMEN ~ Your Friend Brian ~ I apologise that today my Poem (about Angela) carries a message the is the opposite of Yours B.
Thank you Brian, yes it is challenging, thank you for holding us in your prayers.
You have no need to apologise about your poem Brian, this is what the site is about, different aspects of our lives.
Sensitive write Gold. Hold on in there, so you don't both go 'downhill' - if it is downhill, or whatever it is. Not that your wife has 'lost her faith' altogether' surely.
We might all do this in some cases, sometimes in lesser troubles, just because we are fed up or something.
Then there's the 'Why' or 'Whys' of real situations, some that we can't answer, or not 'this side of heaven', as they say. Thinking of you both in prayers.
Thank you Orchi, no she hasn't lost her faith but she is being mightily challenged, as am I.
Superb write Andy and yes the music fits it well - not my favourite movement but so full of pathos for this oh so sad tale.
Thank you Michael, much appreciated.
Goldfinch, I do not cry easily. I think the last time I cried was when my mom died. But reading your poem tonight (yes, it is still Thursday here), I had a hard time to hold these tears back. The way you take care of her...you are a saint. I do worry that this will happen to us, either me or my wife, and how will I react if it is her? Will she take care of me? I want to be able to read it again in the future, so I am making it a favorite.
Sounds bloody cheezy, but he wrote such a beautiful, caring poem!
Thank you Fred you are most kind. I would not wish dementia on anyone, it is such a hard and very emotive disease to deal with. Stay well my friend.
After my earlier comment and my comment exchange with Martina, I would like to say this:
The reason this poem affected me so much is that my mom was suffering from dementia, my dad's best friend's wife had Alzheimers and he cared for her for years, my sister has MS and her daughter is always there for her, and my sister in law's husband is in early stages of dementia.
I think it is time that we recognize the incredible amount of love and effort made by the care-givers. These afflictions are as hard if not harder for them then they are for the people suffering. That is why I think Goldfinch is a saint. I admire and salute him.
You are so kind Fred, I am no saint, I made a vow “in sickness and in health” that vow will never be broken and my love for her, for each other will never die.
God can take a little blame even if he doesn't deserve it. Same as Jesus died on the cross for our sins. God takes it all in because he loves us all.
It is so ironic though that with all the good she has done in her life and all the belief in the Christian Faith that she has always had that it is being taken from her.
Not "taken", just a part of life. And bless you Goldie for taking care of her as you have for so long.
Keep preservering my friend.
I will.
All I can say to you is keep marching on and you are in my prayers as well!
Thank you Christina, most kind.
When one is taught to believe that a higher power is directing every aspect of our lives, it is understandable what she said. Not a judgment, simply an observation.
Your devotion to her is a wonderful tribute to your love, Goldie, and an inspiration to all. May you find the strength to carry on!
Thank you Louis, strength is needed at all times.
I sometimes question God's guidance. It's no wonder we sometimes question Him! Where is He when we need Him most?
Of course the answer is that God gave us freedom of will and it is that that we use in a way which destroys what God wants.
She has carried so much burden on her for too long, she just need to unload it. This is a way to do so. On the other hand, she is blessed to have you beside her. Very heart touching. Hug from me.
Thank you m and m your comments are much appreciated.
