The Game Is Back.

Goldfinch60

It is back in my life once more,

That game I used to watch for days at a time,

Stolen from me so many years ago,

Taken to a channel I would not use,

Years and years of this void in my life,

Only seeing highlights,

But it is back.

I can watch its beauty,

I can watch its subtleties,

The wonder of the game,

The game that can last for five days,

That glorious game of cricket.

But to my mind it has changed,

The players are all so slim,

And the biggest change

That I see now,

So many years later,

Is that they are all SO YOUNG!

  • Comment from author about the poem: For those in the US you may not understand cricket but it is the finest game of all and the 'Test Matches' are international games and the most important of these are the ones between England and Austraia, they are called the ashes, (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ashes for details). The televised rites for this was taken by Sky which I refuse to subscribe to but it is now back within my purview so I have been watching the game between Australia and England televised from Australia. a test match can last for up to five days, i have just seen the end of day 3.

Describes it well - nothing like a game of cricket on the village green where I enjoy it most - the king of games.

    • Goldfinch60

So true Michael, but to me there is something about the test matches that surpasses all others.
      Thank you.

I know what you mean but those lazy hazy days sitting on the green with gin and tonic or a pint from the Coach and Horses - so terribly British don't you know.

You are right I don’t understand Cricket at all we are never exposed to it in the USA . I can feel your passion for the game in your poem ! So well done

Thanks WL, we all have our passions for differing sports, it is what makes life so wonderful.

CRICKET lovely CRICKET ~ It was at Headingly (Yorkshire) where I saw it ! My Dad was a Cricketer and I went to A Boys School so we took it all very seriously and a Test Match lasts 5 days ! Trump would expect to build a Skyscraper in that time and sometimes does ! It's good for your Love Life and I could judge "A Fine Leg" and "Bowl A Maiden Over" or "Catch Her in Her Slips" ! Only in a Cricket Commentary (Lords 1976 West Indies v England) could Johnners say "The Bowler's HOLDING ~ The Batsman's WILLEY" Cricket Lovely Cricket ~ Thanks GOD for BREXIT the only place in Europe they play it is CORFU ~ We'll get our National Game back ~ AMEN ! Yours Brian (Man with the square leg !).

I too have not been exposed to the game very much. But I do know you Brits are very passionate about the game. And well written Andy.

                  • Goldfinch60

I was exposed to the game very early in my life and seen many changes but the basics that I first knew and loved are still there in test cricket.
