Tune: Antioch

('Joy to the world')

Luke 2 v.9-14

The last line of each verse is repeated 3 times.

********

Angel to shepherds did appear

And told them, 'Have no fear'

For behold, I bring good tidings

All creation it sings (x3)

Good tidings of great joy to all

People, come, on Christ call

For unto you is born this day

A Saviour for alway (x3)

In city of David, He born

He brings redemption's dawn

This Saviour who is Christ the Lord

He e'er the living word (x3)

This be the sign, how Him you find

Take to you as remind[er]

That you shall find the babe therein

A manger, free from sin (x3)

He shall be wrapped in swaddling clothes

Humility He knows

A manger, animal food-trough

Sufficed, it was enough (x3)

Then suddenly angelic host

'Glory in highest most'

All praising, peace and good will

He has thought on man still (x3)

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. Common Metre, with last line repeated 3 times. Here's a whole 7 minutes of it in lively style. It's sung, then sung all over again. A long time to sing!

Thanks Gold. Yes, a tune with a name where a lot of mission work started out from - Antioch. The one in Syria. There's one in Pisidia too, both in the Bible.

Thanks Brian. Yes, a jolly tune, and message is not too heavy doctrinally. As long our joy is in the real meaning of it, and not in plenty of booze, etc!
