Dinner was due,
So into the kitchen I went.
“What shall we have tonight?” I thought,
I know, we shall have risotto,
I will do a beef and mushroom one.
So all the ingredients were found,
Prepared,
All was nearly ready.
Some wine was needed,
The most important of ingredients,
As I never use water
Where wine will do.
So I go to the cellar,
(What a laugh, the cellar,
It is a rack in the garage!).
That will be the one,
One of my favourite Riojas.
So I take it back to the kitchen,
Open it,
Let it breathe.
Of course I need to taste it,
To see if it is good enough,
Good enough to cook with.
I put my nose to the glass
And smell this delightful smell,
The glass goes to my lips
And I trickle some of the nectar,
Trickle it into my mouth.
I am blown away!
It is wonderful!
I take a few sips,
And start to cook.
The ingredients are cooking,
So I add some of the wine,
This ravishing Rioja.
The smell rises from the pot,
I know this will be special,
This combination of Italy and Spain
Will be wondrous,
And it was,
As the clean plates showed,
And as the empty bottle showed.
A wonderful meal,
For my lover,
And for me.

- Comment from author about the poem: Just a bit of fun. I enjoy cooking and I always use wine instead of water, this bottle of Rioja that I opened was of a type I buy regularly, I had recently bough this one and it was one of the best wines I have ever drunk, I though that it was the 2012 vintage that I normally buy but this one was 2009, what a difference! I will have to go in search of some more of this.

Oohh nice, and a fine write Gold. Oh why do I never use wine when water will do. Pssttt, hear me water syphon of the phantom whisky-waterer?!
Thanks Orchi, keep that water away from me!
Bravo Goldi!
Your poem...un pranzo squisito!! (A delicious meal) with the perfect ingredients...the risotto, the wine 🍷, and Dean Martin’s “Volare” for dessert! Awesome! I totally enjoyed the read! Grazie! Going right into my favorites!
Now I must go shopping for that Rioja😉
~Laura~
Thank you very much Laura, I enjoy all types of food but my favourite has always been Italian. I only hope that when I cook it I do it justice.
That Rioja was beautiful, I have another bottle waiting for me.
Salute!🍷🍷
Not familiar with Rioja but now must try it. Enticing write, Goldie!
Rioja is my favourite wine, there are many yet to be tried but someone has to do it.
Thank you for yur kind words.
Brilliant Goldfinch60,
What a charming poem. The Rioja is very tempting. I am a white wine person though all the way.
Keep writing in 2018

Thank you FineB. There is no way that I will stop writing.
My mouth watered but I must say with an Asian wife our table like yours is a veritable mixture of world cuisines - great write Andy - ours is usually merlot as it's my wife's favourite but I do like a good Rioja
Food from around the world is wonderful, I just hope that I can do justice to it when I prepare it - no-one has complained - yet.
I too enjoy a good Merlot but my favourite has always been Rioja.
TWENTY out of TWENTY (2 x 10) for this one ANDY ! DEAN MARTIN one of my fave singers ~ I give lectures on HIM ! He was born in the USA but only spoke Italian before he went to School ~ much better accent (and Singer) than Sinatra ! Dean milks every word ! RIOJA VINO TINTO is my fave red wine ~ the older the better ~ 2009 ~ good vintage ! Angela's Dad is Spanish so we always have RIOJA for celebrations (He gets a "good price" muy barato !). Beef & Mushroom Risotto with Rioja Tinta in the mix and the glass ~ Ese es Pardiso ! Thanks for the memory ~ Brian !
I am glad that yo enjoyed it Brian, it was a good meal even if I do say so myself.
I have always liked Dean Martin as well.
Absolutely love this poem, Goldfinch! I too cook a lot with wine, and usually have a bottle open to take a little sip now and then while cooking. Hey, all great chefs do that!!!
I am more of a Zinfandel guy, but there are days when anything that is red and has alcohol is fine with me! 🙂
A man after my own heart Fred, there is no way you can cook without sampling the wine - even if it does not necessarily go into the pot.
