Tune: Winchester New
('Ride on, ride on, in majesty')
John 6 v.1 - 13
********
Philip did learn to trust Christ more
In desert near Bethsaida sure
At feeding of five thousand plus
A natural commotion and fuss
Jesus asked Philip, 'Whence shall we
By bread for these, how shall it be?'
Yet He said this to test him out
He knew what he would do, no doubt
Philip replied, natural answer
Two hundred pennyworth bread, sir
Shall not be enough, not suffice
For all, it be enormous price
No, not over six months wages
Would feed the crowd of all ages
Though Andrew offered a boy's lunch
But it be scarce menial brunch
Jesus took the five loaves, two fish
Making an appetising dish
Gave thanks to God, distributed
To disciples, they by Him led
Led to share out among the crowd
All had more than enough endowed
For twelve baskets wrer there gathered
Of food fragments, and faith was stirred
Stirred in Philip, all present
Jesus' miracles, no relent
By God's power impossible
Situations be fulfilled all
Grant us Lord, your power to see
Not rely on humanity
But grow in faith and confidence
Trusting your bounteous providence

With one penny being a day's wages, 200 pennyworth would be over 6 month's wages, but still not be enough to feed over 5,000.
It seems only the men were counted, as it says '5,000 men, besides women and children'!
Can you imagine how much that would cost today? Well written and very interesting, as always, orchie!
Thanks Fred. I would want loaves and pork pies. Oops, they can't have pork, they're Jewish!
Thanks ANDY ~ Philip a very consistent Disciple ! Thanks for sharing ODE & ORATORIO ~ well presented ! I like the mention of the MIRACLE a sign to encourage the Disciple's Faith ~ AMEN ~ BRIAN
Thanks Brian. Yes, even though some may have thought 'Andrew, don't be ridiculous. How can 5 loaves and 2 fish feed over 5,000?'
Erm, a bit like the prodigal son story? The only one not happy was the fatted calf - aww!
And here - the only one not happy was the boy who had his lunch taken! But he had more than enough to eat too, with the miracle.
There is a theory that when people went to a meeting of such vast numbers many took food with them and that apart from the loaves and fishes their food was shared as well.
I believe it was just the loaves and fishes.
Ahh, I think I heard that as well Gold. I'm with you, in believing it was just the loaves and fishes. I suppose some would say 'What a daft lot - did more than 5,000 of them forget to bring food?!'
