No Way to Kiss a Country Man

Lorna

E.O. you old rascal you

When I was nineteen

Jamie took me to see you

Way up on your mountain

Still mean and still lean

And though no longer young

You were sinew and oak

You were salt of the earth

We sat as you told us

How it had been

How you'd fed your family

When times had been thin

The afternoon passed

And I reached for your cheek

To give it a peck

Till next time we'd meet

That's no way to kiss

Was all that you said

And you kissed with such vigor

I'll never forget!

Such a surprise

And such nervous laughter

Jamie stepped in, said shame

"She could be your daughter!"

But my forever nineteen self

Has wondered aplenty

What must you have been like

As a young buck of twenty!

What a wonderful read Lorna. About your grandfather maybe? He sounds like a hard working respectable man.

    • Lorna

Heavens not my grandfather - that would border on incest - ha ha! An old horseman who had lived (hard) through the Depression - he was a rascal...........but had more character in his little finger than .... well fill in the blank ........ suffice to say, they don't make them like that any more.

Oh, I didn't mean a romantic relationship, I was under them impression it was of a elderly family member. But I did get that he was a hard worker and as you say, "a rascal". Anyway, a great write.

A well-written tribute to the men who were real in every sense Lorna - - they certainly meant what they said and did - - though you were only nineteen methinks that woudl have been a kiss to remember. Great read.

It was Fay! - thanks - I know "abuse" by men is bad but I think it's gone over the top to where even flirting and playfulness has become taboo - hope they don't cut off their noses to spite their faces.

Good write, that man has seen life and is full of knowledge.

          • Lorna

            Yup - that he was!
