I only had to go to school

KatieRivera

I only had to go school today

I ate my toast I grabbed my bag

And don’t forget to say bye to dad

All I had was to go to lesson

Meet my friends

Give a presentation

Maybe today I can learn something new

Do a science experiment I’ll be happy to

Go to homecoming with someone I love

But how can I do that

I only had to go to school

I ate my toast I grabbed my bag

This time I couldn’t say bye to Dad

All I had was to go to lesson

Hide in a cupboard

Not to give myself away

And cover my ears to block out the screams

Maybe today something would change

My safety ensured

But not today

I only had to go to school

A place of learning

Friendship

And love too

But what I wasn’t prepared for

An early departure

From the world that I lived

I looked forward to my graduation

Sometimes we forget to say goodbye

But that’s not our faults

We did not plan this

But we could have prevented this

I only had to go to school today

My daughter said as she smiled and made her way

I don’t remember saying goodbye,

 but I hope I did

Because that was the last time

I saw her alive

I wasn’t prepared for what came next

To outlive my daughter

And bury her along with the rest.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I am from the UK and have not been in a school shooting though, I am an empath. I wrote this poem to not only express how I felt about the recent shooting, but what I felt listening to a father who only sent his daughter to school because it is school and wouldn't expect to have a shooting. But in reality it should have been expected since guns are legal and people can kill others, which is why I highlight that it can be prevented. Those who live with guns in their life have to face danger everyday. The phrase fighting fire with fire does not count when the lives of the innocent people are at cost. All they have to do is simply remove guns, and none of this would have happened.

I don't understand what outback is trying to say but I for one am with you all the way - to us Brits it's sheer lunacy not to tackle gun ownership - per capita there are 300 gun deaths in the US compared to just one in the UK where we have strict gun control - a no-brainer. Super write.

Everybody should read this regardless of position. A compassionate look into the lives of those directly affected, thank you for that.

WELCOME KAI ~ Thanks for your first POEM a very elegant and moving tribute to the DEAD & BEREAVED in the School Shootings in "The Sunshine State !" SO so sad and so so moving. I'm involved in Education in a College and I cried for the so sad loss of 17 Young & Promising Lives. When will they ever learn ? Death & Wounding by GUN per capita in the USA is 100 times greater than in the UK because there are 325 million People in the USA and 325 million Guns. When I visited a GUN STORE in Alabama it made me physically ill. The GUN Laws are outdated ~ but TRUMP will do NOTHING to alter the USA Gun Laws ! Please pray for Florida & America ~ Thanks for caring ~ Yours BRIAN (UK)
