Aquarius Lost

Lorna

The stars aligned and heavens fixed a course

It's madness and its poetry, our happy days of youth

Of flowers, peace and love united us

In that short dawning of Aquarius

That dawning had its little day

And those of us who lived it grew our hair

And braided beads and daisies round our heads

And danced in colored coats in muddy parks

And loved the ones we danced with in the dark

A far cry from the monotone today

It was a time of freedom for the young

Youths whose youth is gone

But not so far as youth of now

All corporate gagged and bound

Their youth is stolen

Never to be found

  • Comment from author about the poem: Reality is I know that everyone has to get caught up in some kind of chains - hopefully ones that they enjoy. I am just sad for the young these days who are being churned up in the corporate greed and fed the story that you have to come out of college with thousands of dollars of debt so that you can never escape, have kids but hardly can fit in a moment to see them because of work, have to have the biggest house on the block, walk around with phones in their ears hoping to connect ..... no wonder so many of them feel like they are going crazy. We need another Age of Aquarius......... (I should add that it is one of the only generations to stop a war)

Thanks Laura - but like Kurt's message today, it just make you feel so sad and helpless.........

Have to agree with Laura in that you've hit the nail squarely on the head with this perfectly description of the late 60s when "Flower Power" was everything. I was ten years old in the Summer of Love. And I remember life back then. And it is sad that the children of today have a tough road ahead of them. We do need another Age of Aquarius.

    • Lorna

There are always cultural revolutions - maybe today's kids will just get fed up and find other paths............

      • Accidental Poet

Yes Lorna, you're right and hopefully the youth of today will seek out more positive paths and do what our generation has not been able to do. Again Lorna, excellent poem.

A fine write Lorna. I don't go along with 'The Age of.......' thingys though!
Meanwhile - you don't want no Age of Aquarius. It will be torment, cos I shall sing the song of that title! 'Sing' being the dreaded word! heehee.

        • Lorna

As long as you keep your clothes on we can stand it!

        • Kurt Philip Behm

          I particularly like these lines....

          "Youths whose youth is gone
But not so far as youth of now
          All corporate gagged and bound"

          Is that 'Newtown' Bucks County?

          • Lorna

Newtown CT Kurt - little town of the infamous school shootings (I mean one of them.......)

            • Kurt Philip Behm

              Tragic!

            • BRIAN & ANGELA

"O YES ~ I remember it well ~ I think !" Today it's "The Age of Mysterious" and alas no ending Sight ! Yours BRIAN !

Spot on and well expressed Lorna

Very good write Lorna, I remember the sixties and that time of freedom and interaction with each other was beautiful. The hippies had it right - Make love, not war.

I love the throwback feeling the second stanza gives me 🙂
