The Scrum.

Goldfinch60

The rugby match was in full flow,

Bodies crashing against bodies,

The oval ball moving side to side.

A fast-moving match,

Suddenly it stopped,

A scrum was called.

The rules and their vagaries

Were now to be seen.

The eight crouched,

Binded together

Faced the other eight,

They crashed together and pushed.

The whistle went,

Something was wrong,

But nobody seemed to know.

Why could it not be clear?

It is one of life’s paradoxes

That can never be resolved,

The great minds kept trying,

That even Steven Hawking was baffled.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I have been a rugby fan for as long as I can remember and watch practically all the rugby that is broadcast on television. Last weekend it was the final day of the Six Nations Championship, an annual international competition UK between England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy. The scrum is one way of restarting play after a minor infringement and it has many problems. This week Professor Steven Hawking had died and was in our thoughts so when a scrum was having problems one of the commentators said that it was a problem that even Steven Hawking could not have sorted out.

Fabulous game which is often baffling to us who are familiar with the rules - I do wonder what our friends across the pond make of it - bit like American football in reverse (which completely baffles most of us here in the UK) . Enjoyed the write Andy.

Very true Michael, there have been some great games in this Six Nations but England weren't in any of them.

From a woman's point of view - what a lovely tangle of men!!!!

Great comment Lorna. Most of them are gentlemen off the pitch.

SCRUM ~ Skirmish of Childish Rough and Unruly Men !
Thanks ANDY ~ That is why in my playing days (14 ~ 30) I always played Footy and always in GOAL because it is illegal to tackle a GOALIE ! Because our Schools Head's Son had nearly died on the Rugger Pitch we only played Footy and always won the Inter-Schools Trophy ! England really went off the boil in the Six Nations ~ and were even beaten by France and the Auld Foe ~ SCOTLAND ! Thanks for scrumming ~ BRIAN !

Thanks for the kind comment, your lack of knowledge about scrumming is probably the same as mine is about American Football.

              Gold,
I’ve attended many soccer matches (in my case). I can relate to your write! It can be very exasperating or exhilarating...depending on the match!

I do not watch soccer but as Italy are in the Six Nations Rugby you may enjoy watching them, I certainly do.. Thanks for you comment Laura.
