Not a Word.

Goldfinch60

There they sat

This married couple

Of a certain age.

He drinks his coffee

And reads a book,

She drinks her coffee

And taps on her pad,

Not a word passed between them.

Is this what life could be

When you have been married

For so many years.

I often wonder this exact same thing. You speak the truth. "Probably a good thing you didn't give it to them" haha.

      • Goldfinch60

Thank you Nicholas. I only give pleasant poems to people in the coffee bar.

It seems to happen across the age spectrum - sad isn't it !!

        • Goldfinch60

Yes it is very sad, the art of conversation is being lost.

Only just realised the clip features my favourite modern composer - I've seen him in concert - just magic - and I often relax to his music when I'm painting.

          • Goldfinch60

He is a fine composer Michael.

Diario Mali is probably my favourite album and yet it's not heard anywhere as often as his other works.

I really like the picture of the hippo.
              ha! ha!

I liked that as well - could not work out what it had to do with the music though.

THANKS FOR THE WARNING ANDY ~ I'm not even married yet. Alas with many "past their sell-by-date) marriages ~ Familiarity seems to border on contempt ! Angela is going on a WORK EXCHANGE to New Zealand in May so we will probably be 37 & 32 when we get married ~ so will be lucky to make our RUBY and most RUBIES (40 years married) I know still seem to be in LOVE & AMOROUS ! Loved the MUSIC but not the implication in the Poem ! Yours BRIAN ! Please check my SEASONS & FUSION on CARS & BYKES ~ Thanks B.

We are as old as that couple I saw and we still talk to each other.

                  Andy,
Much to ponder upon with your poem! A fine write! I enjoyed listening to one of my favorite pianist! I had the pleasure to hear him play at the Quirinale in Rome! I will be attending his live concert in NY in June! He’s awesome! Thank you for sharing this wonderful posting!

I see young people playing on their phones and not talking! It's crazy! What happened to being in love?

                    • Goldfinch60

They are in love - in love with their 'phones!

Or just companionable silence? Did you ever see that Jack Nicholson movie where he says he believes people run out of things to say to each other so in desperation the man asks the woman to marry him just to start a conversation........ ha!

                      • Goldfinch60

It is becoming more common since mobile ‘phones and pads have come into existence.
No I haven’t seem that film, sounds interesting.

                        • Lorna

"As Good as it Gets"........... light fare but I liked it........ Nicholson was at his quirky best. I think his best ever is "About Schmidt"...........
